      • Large gilded bronze jug France S. XIX
        Feb. 08, 2023

Large gilded bronze jug France S. XIX

        Est: -

Pierre Alexandre Schoenewerk (France 1820-1885) and casting by Auguste Maximilien Delafontaine (1813-1892) Large Neo-Renaissance gilt bronze jug h. 1845-55. Decoration both in round shape and in relief of mythological characters. On the handle is a newt and under it a child presenting a shell. On the ovoid body of the jug decorated with flowers and naturalistic scrolls there are cartouches on the front and back representing The Toilet of Venus surrounded by putti blowing shells and Diana and Acteon. They are two themes related to love and water, opposed because although Venus is the goddess of love and voluptuousness, Diana is the representation of the moon and chastity. The model of the jug is inspired by one of the decorative frescoes made by Polidoro de Caravaggio (1499-1543) on the façade of the Palazzo milesi in Rome c. 1520 that were later taken to engraving by Giovanni Battista Galestruzzi around 1655-60. In the magazine L'Art pour Tous: encyclopédie de l'art industriel et décoratif (nº 13 Paris 1861) the designer Emile Auguste Reiber (1826-1893) echoed this same model in one of the illustrations. Schoenwerk, French sculptor was protected by Princess Matilde and achieved great success during the Second Empire. A disciple of Trinqueti and David D'Angers, he was highly influenced by Italy and antiquity and collaborated in the decorations of important buildings such as the Louvre, the Tuileries, the Hotel d'Ville or the Garnier Opera. He worked at the famous goldsmith firm Froment Meurice, collaborating on pieces such as the Baron Feuchére vase in 1843 (Louvre Museum Inv. OA3253) or the reliquary of Saint Mary Magdalene and Saint Vincent de Paul in the Church of La Magdalena and also worked for the firm Morel making the table sourtout for Prince Radziwill or the Hope Cup in 1855. Origin: -Don Fausto Saavedra y Collado, III Marquis of Viana (1902-1980), Palacio de Viana in Madrid, today Ministry of Foreign Affairs, until 1939. -Private collection of Madrid Height: 100 cm

Jules Graux cast bronzes for many of the most distinguished sculptors of the day; amongst them were Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux, James Pradier, Albert-Ernest Carrier-Belleuse and Emmanuel Frémiet, these included premier editions and Salon castings.

        Est: $700 - $1,000

Antique, 19th Century Pierre Alexandre (Alexander) Schoenewerk (French 1820-1885) Bronze Sculpture. Finely detailed, depicting a seated maiden with a tortoise shell lyre. Measures - 13 1/2" high x 17" long. Signed on base. Pierre Alexandre Schoenewerk (1820-1885) was a Romantic French sculptor. He was born on February 18, 1820, the son of an immigrant tailor, precluding him from competing later in his life for the Prix de Rome. Schoenewerk suffered from mental illness and in 1866 he was confined to a mental ward at the Asylum of Charenton, France. After spending two and half years in the institution, he was released and married the widow of one his friends, the French engraver Adolphe Pierre Riffaut (1821-1859). After ten years of marriage, Schoenewerk's wife became mentally unstable. The artist suffered from depression, and distraught with the reception of his work at the 1885 Paris Salon committed suicide on July 23, 1885, throwing himself off the third-floor of his home.
