      Est: €1,760 - €2,200

Porcelain, polychrome and gold painted Meissen, c. 1900 Porcelain Manufactory Meissen, established in 1710 Underglaze blue crossed swords mark, embossed mark, incised mark Model: Johann Carl Schönheit (1730-1805), 1772 Model Number: E 4 From the series "Five Senses" Height: 15.5 cm Good condition Object is regular taxed. 19% VAT is added to the purchase price for deliveries within the EU. The allegoric group depicts a courtly dressed lady sitting beside a small table with a bird cage on it. She is stroking a bird.  Condition: The figural group is in good condition. The edge of the table shows a tiny chip. Die height of the figure is 15.5 cm. Porcelain Manufactory Meissen  Porcelain has been known in Europe since the 13th century, but always had to be imported from China. Thus it was mostly of lower quality – the Chinese rarely gave their best ware to the foreigners – and extremely expensive. As demand for porcelain became greater, European alchemists tried to discover the formula to create hard-paste porcelain. The production of the first European hard-paste porcelain was the result of a collaboration between the alchemist Johann Friedrich Böttger and the scientist Ehrenfried Walther Graf von Tschirnhaus at the court of Augustus the Strong, Elector of Saxony, in Dresden. As a matter of fact, it was finally achieved for the first time in Europe in 1708 to produce a white hard paste porcelain and in 1710 Augustus established Europe’s first hard-paste porcelain factory in the Albrechtsburg, a palace in Meissen. The so-called ‘Böttgerporzellan’ actually had more of a stoneware quality and it was not until the year 1713 that white porcelain was available for purchase. Initially unmarked, the motif of the ‘crossed swords’ was developed in the early 1720s and used from 1723 onwards. Since then, beautifully modelled and painted figures and table services were produced at Meissen, establishing its reputation as the pre-eminent porcelain factory in Europe. Outstanding potters, modelers and painters, e.g. Johann Joachim Kändler (1706-1775), Johann Gottlieb Klinger (1701-1781) and Count Camillo Marcolini (1739-1814), were employed at the factory, which dominated the 18th century style of porcelain, and Meissen wares and figurines were imitated by craftsmen at other porcelain factories throughout Europe. Meissen celebrated its 300 years of existence in 2008. Until today, Meissen porcelain is known for highest quality and originality and greatly appreciated.(kre) Shipping costs excl. statutory VAT and plus 2,5% (+VAT) shipping insurance.

Until today, Meissen porcelain is known for highest quality and originality and greatly appreciated. Meissen, Porcelain Group of Figures ‘The Good Father’, c. 1800

      Est: €1,000 - €1,300

Porcelain with polychrome painted decoration and gold Germany, presumably circa 1800 Meissen Porcelain Manufactory, established in 1710 The base with incised mark ‘H 98’, crossed swords mark not visible Model number: H 98, from 1785 by Johann Carl Schönheit (1730-1805) Depiction of an affectionate father with his three children Height: 21 cm Good condition Estimate by Auctionata Expert: 2,000 Euro This group of figures belongs to an ensemble, which presents the ideal image of the family in the Age of Enlightenment. The counterpart to this work is ‘The Good Mother’, modeled by Michel Victor Acier and Johann Carl Schönheit circa 10 years earlier. The present porcelain sculpture depicts an intimate scene in a bourgeois home. A father seated on a bench in casual clothes with a bonnet, dressing gown and slippers, lovingly plays with his three frolicking children. A small dog seated on the left of the oval pedestal observes the scene with interest. A moralistic depiction of an idyllic family life with an expression of humanity and sincerity. Condition: The figure is in generally good condition. Partly some wear to the colors and gold. Une Arm restored. Minor chips, e.g. to the fingertips of the figures or the leaves of the flowers on the base. Nearly Invisible Hairline cracks. The height measures 21 cm. Porcelain Manufactory Meissen Porcelain has been known in Europe since the 13th century, but always had to be imported from China. Thus it was mostly of lower quality – the Chinese rarely gave their best ware to the foreigners – and extremely expensive. Europeans tried to copy the Chinese porcelain for centuries but only in 1708 managed to create real porcelain – in Meissen. The manufacturer’s brand, the crossed swords in blue, has been in use since 1722 and is still a guarantee for the high quality of the porcelain. Meissen celebrated its 300 years of existence in 2008. Quality has always been the number one criteria for Meissen and they go as far as having their own mine to win the needed kaolin, also known as china clay, for the production. It takes several years to reach the degree of a ‘master painter’ in Meissen, but judging by the quality of the painting, it is definitely worth it.
