(Vienna 1826–1897 Krumpendorf) By the Fountain in Taormina, signed A. Schönn, oil on canvas, 168 x 128 cm, framed Exhibited: Viennese Annual Exhibition, 1885. Catalogued in: Friedrich von Boetticher, Malerwerke des 19. Jahrhunderts, Hofheim am Taunus 1979, vol. II, 2, p. 638, no. 53. The Austrian genre and history painter Alois Schönn began his formal artistic education at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna in 1846. However, his studies were interrupted a few years later when he was conscripted into military service during the political upheavals of 1848. After the war, he returned to Vienna, where he captured his experiences in his paintings and soon gained widespread recognition. In 1850, Schönn left Vienna for Paris, where he exhibited his works at the Paris Salon. Following an extended stay in the French capital, he embarked on extensive travels, visiting Africa, the Orient, Turkey, Egypt, and Tunis. On his return journey from the Orient, he stopped in Sicily and, in the years that followed, made regular study trips to Italy. His artistic focus was primarily on depicting scenes of rural folk life, and even during his lifetime, he was highly regarded for the vividness of his portrayals. Schönn possesses a mastery of colour that few artists can equal, and in recent years, he has made remarkable progress in this regard. He is a fine observer; his figures are true representations of folk types, full of energy and life—often appearing as though they need only breath to come alive. (Constantin von Wurzbach, Biographisches Lexikon des Kaiserthums Oesterreich, vol. 31, 1876, pp. 101–102.)<

Catalogued in: Friedrich von Boetticher, Malerwerke des 19. Jahrhunderts, Hofheim am Taunus 1979, vol. II, 2, p. 638, no. 53. The Austrian genre and history painter Alois Schönn began his artistic training at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna in 1846, but was conscripted into military service just a few years later during the turmoil of 1848. He returned to Vienna after the end of the war, where he recorded his impressions in his paintings, which gained rapid recognition. In 1850 he left Vienna and went to Paris, where he exhibited at the Paris Salon. Following a longer sojourn in Paris, he travelled extensively to Africa, the Orient, Turkey, Egypt, and Tunis. He visited Sicily on his return journey and regularly travelled to Italy on study trips over the next few years. He mostly focused on depicting rural folk life and his lively depictions were much appreciated during his lifetime. "Schönn has a power of colour that few artists possess, and in recent years in particular he has made brilliant progress. He is a fine observer, his figures are real folk types, full of vigour and life, often lacking only that they breathe." (Vienna 1826–1897 Krumpendorf) Parade of Runners on 1 May, after the Race in the Prater, signed A. Schönn, 132 x 204 cm, framed Provenance: Sale, Dorotheum, Vienna, 17 March 1949, lot 104, plate 16; Cafe Bürgertheater, 1030 Vienna; Private Collection, Vienna. Catalogued in: Friedrich von Boetticher, Malerwerke des 19. Jahrhunderts, Hofheim am Taunus 1979, vol. II, 2, p. 638, no. 68. Since the 17th century, there is evidence of so-called “runners” in the Habsburg Empire, whose profession was facilitating the rapid transmission of messages over long distances. However, from the early modern period onwards, runner messengers became increasingly obsolete due to the establishment of the general postal system and better infrastructure. In Austria, and especially in Vienna, the “runner” had a certain degree of international recognition, so that a development took place from the running messenger or lordly gala runner to a sporting discipline. The original function of a so-called runner was to run the carriage of the lordship and to clear any obstacles out of the way, carrying torches in the dark, and they were also messengers. In Vienna, these runners were probably organised in a guild since the end of the 18th century and were subject to an apprenticeship of several years, which they completed with a so-called “free run”. From the 18th century onwards, the runners also organised competitions or trial runs where an approximate distance of 18 km had to be covered. These runs were held annually in the Prater from 1822 and were included as an event in the May Festival. Alois Schönn depicts such a running event in the present lot. The painter decided to reproduce the moment after a successfully completed competition. Thus the runners march in a solemn procession behind the guild standard, which usually led to a nearby coffee house where the participants had their well-earned breakfast. Schönn meticulously depicts the attire of the May 1 runners. This consists of a white jacket, white long trousers, white or green cap with a plume of feathers, and a sash or neckerchief. Also to be seen are the whips which the runners had placed around their necks to hold their hands to. Behind the bearer of the guild’s standard, the runners, numbering about ten to twelve, are led by the winners. The fastest three to four participants received embroidered prize flags and prize money. On these prize flags, in addition to the embroidered rank numbers, there were different animal symbols that represented a certain rank depending on the speed of the animals: first rank a silver bird, second rank a golden stag, third rank a silver dog and fourth rank a golden rider. The flag of the first three ranks waving in the wind can be made out on the present lot. Alois Schönn skilfully picks up on the festive character of the running event in his large-format painting, which is probably based on a watercolour. A young lady has already hooked herself in the arm of a runner, so that the exuberant mood of the spectators is literally palpable

Alois Schönn, The Fish Market in Chioggia

    Est: €20,000 - €25,000

Signed and dated lower left: A. Schönn. 1871.Alois Schönn first apprenticed as an engraver from 1841/42, but also took private painting lessons with Leander Russ, an artist well-known for his Oriental motifs. Schönn then began to study at the Akademie der Bildenden Künste in Vienna and was there taught by the history painter and member of the Nazarene circle Joseph von Führich. He took part in the Italian campaign of 1848 and there painted his first battle scenes.Schönn lived and worked in Paris from 1850/51 where he studied the works of Vernet. He travelled to Africa in 1851, and this trip was followed by several further educational sojourns to Hungary, Transylvania, Galicia, Dalmatia, Tunisia and Italy. The present work was painted after his trip to Italy and unites Schönn's talent as a veduta painter with his gift for capturing the shortest of moments to create a work of great detail and naturalistic beauty. Within the old walls of the lagoon town of Chioggia, the weekly market has begun. We see two market criers praising their wares, a merchant weighing a fish, a fisherman mending his nets and customers bartering. The many different groups create a fascinating composition with a snapshot character. The work also contains numerous smaller scenes on the side lines which distract from the main motifs but add life to the painting: The merchant smoking his pipe, the beggar's daughter reaching from her mother's lap for the straws on the ground and the little girl suspiciously eyeing a stray dog. These are not merely figural staffage, but an integral part of this lively market scene.
