Measurements: 26,5 x 43 cm; 42 x 58 cm (frame). Rural landscape with idealized nature in which a series of stone constructions and a water course stand out. The figures, in the foreground, appear in small size, in an important variety of postures and attires, accompanied by animals and horses. These architectures (especially the bridge and the circular building) make the viewer think of the Italian Ponte Lucano, located on the Roman Via Tiburtina, which connects the capital with Hadrian's Villa, despite the differences between the image presented here and the reality of the state of the construction at the time this oil painting would have been made. Mathys Schoevaerdts, also known as Matthijs Schoevaerdts, was a Flemish painter who also produced engravings and drawings, and was appreciated for his landscapes with trees or forests, his seascapes and his genre scenes. He followed, at first, a style close to the tradition initiated by Jan Brueghel the Elder to, over time, go towards a greater closeness with the Italian school and end up under the influence of those known as "Bamboccianti" (Flemish and Dutch artists who worked in Rome the theme of landscape with Italian classicist ruins and harbors). His landscapes are full of figures and anecdotes, with the same preference for light blues and greens of Brueghel the Elder at the beginning of his career. His work has often been attributed to his master and Pieter Bout because of the similarity in style and subject matter between the three. In addition, he often collaborated with his master and figures such as F. Dupont (1660-1712) or his brother Frans Schoevaerdts (active in Brussels in the early 18th century). Schoevaerdts makes individualized groups of figures, in which he frequently includes "exotic" elements (Turkish merchants), with generally imaginary landscapes, whether Flemish village scenes as "capriccios" or views of Italy. Few data are preserved about his life: it is known that in 1682 he began his apprenticeship with Adriaen Frans Boudewijns; he was probably born in Brussels, as he was enrolled in the Brotherhood of Painters of St. Luke in that city between 1692 and 1692 as far as is known; he also spent time in the Dutch area and his last documented work is dated 1702, so he would die after this date but before 1712 (the year in which another document records him as already dead). Despite this short biography, his works were highly valued during his lifetime, and continued to be highly appreciated during the eighteenth century. It is possible to contemplate paintings by the master only in some private collections, but also some institutions have his works: The Fitzwilliam Museum (University of Cambridge, England), British Museum of London, Museum of Fine Arts of Buenos Aires in Argentina, etc.

FANTASIELANDSCHAFT MIT FLUSSLAUF UND REICHER FIGURENSTAFFAGE Öl auf Eichenholz. 31 x 44 cm. Unten mittig signiert. Verso alte Künstlerbezeichnung wohl aus der Entstehungszeit. Der Flame wirkte auch als Kupferstecher. Bekannt ist er für seine durch Staffagefiguren reich belebten Landschaften, in denen zunächst die Brueghel-Tradition erkennbar ist. Später wandte er sich italienischen Einflüssen zu, wenngleich er nie in Italien gewesen zu sein scheint. Erste Nachrichten datieren ins Jahr 1682, als er bei Adriaen Frans Boudewijns ausgebildet wurde. 1690 wird er als Meister der Brüsseler Lukasgilde genannt, wo er bis 1696 als Dekan fungierte. Im vorliegenden Bild ist die spätere Stilistik erkennbar. In seinen Landschaften überrascht stets eine reiche Fantasie mit erzählerischen Bilderfindungen, in denen er den Betrachter zum Augenzeugen fiktiver Geschehnisse macht. Wie zumeist in seinen Werken ist auch hier ein marktähnliches Zusammentreffen gezeigt. Vor schroffer Bergkulisse weitet sich ein Flusstal mit Brücken, seitlich erhöht eine Burg, im Zentrum ein Pferdewagen, im Vordergrund Obstverkauf. So lädt die Darstellung zum abwechslungsreichen Lesen einer fantasievollen Erzählung ein. A.R. (1401491) (11)

DURCH SÜDLICHES DORF REISENDE Öl auf Leinwand. Altdoubliert. 47,8 x 68,5 cm. Unsigniert. In ebonisiertem breiten Profilrahmen. Laut Einlieferer ehemals mit einem Gutachten von Dr. Walther Bernt von 1968, der das Gemälde Mathys Schoevaerdts zuweist. Eine von Hügeln durchzogene Landschaft, deren teils mehrgeschossigen Häuser sich der Steigung der Hügel anpassen, bietet genügend Raum für einen im Licht schimmernden Wasserlauf, tanzende Figuren, einen Tross Reisender gen Vordergrund und zahlreiche mit dem sommerlichen Himmel kontrastierende Bäume. Das vorliegende Gemälde ähnelt kompositionell stark einem Schoevaerdts zugeschriebenen Gemälde (40 x 57,5 cm), das beim RKD unter Nummer 269909 geführt wird. Schoevaerdts war Schüler von Adriaen Frans Boudewijns (1644-1719), sein letztes datiertes Gemälde stammt von 1702. Provenienz: Auktion Stuker, Bern, 10. COPPENS F, oil on canvas, 193.5 x 241 cm, framed Provenance: art market, Italy (as François Coppens); where acquired by the present owner We are grateful to Jan de Maere, who confirmed the attribution for the staffage to Mathijs Schoevaerdts on the basis of a photograph. The present work is a fine example of the collaboration between Schoevaerdts responsible for the staffage and Coppens depicting the wooded landscape. In 1682, Mathijs Schoevaerdts was apprenticed to the landscape painter Adriaen Frans Boudewijns in Brussels. From 1692 to 1696, Schoevaerdts was chairman of the Brussels Guild of painters. His decorative landscapes, created under the spell of Paul Bril and Jan Brueghel I, are often mistaken for works by Pieter Bout and his master, Adriaen Frans Boudewijns, with whom the artist occasionally collaborated as he did with François Coppens as is evident regarding the present composition.

Bei unserem Gemälde, das ein Pendant zu Lot 223 bildet, wird eine Meeresbucht gezeigt, an dessen Ufer Fischerboote angelandet sind, deren Fischer im Begriff sind, ihre Waren an Bewohner einer Stadt zu verkaufen, welche sich vor der fantasievollen Architektur versammelt haben. Häufig ist es, wie hier auch an einen Flusslauf verortet, wie er hier durch Brücke und ein bemanntes Boot gezeigt wird. Vor einer großen Ruine mit zahlreichen Durchgängen und Rundbögenfenstern lagern eine Vielzahl von Figuren in teils farbenprächtiger Kleidung, die Männer meistens mit Turbanen. Im Vordergrund rechts Mütter mit ihren Kindern, mehrere Männer im Gespräch sowie ein Schimmel und zwei aufgebaute Zelte. Linksseitig am Ufer des Flusses, auf dem ein Schiff zu sehen ist, ein Mann in Rückenansicht auf einem Pferd mit Bogen und einer hohen, in den Himmel reichenden Standarte, umgeben von zahlreichen Figurengruppen. Unter hohem hellblauen Himmel mit weißen Wolkenformationen fällt der Blick auf eine kleine, am Wasser gelegene Stadt und das reich bevölkerte Ufer: einige Boote haben angelegt und sind beim be- und entladen von diversen Obst- und Gemüsekörben sowie Fässern. Am Ufer selbst sind Käufer, die ihre Pferde schon mit der Ware beladen haben, eine Kutsche, ein Karren und mehrere Frauen und Kinder erkennbar. Über allem ragen rechtsseitig auf einer kleinen Anhöhe die Flügel einer Bockwindmühle in den Himmel. Im Wasser des linken Vordergrundes schwimmen zudem friedlich drei Schwäne, die oft auch bei anderen Werken des Künstlers wiederzufinden sind. Erzählerische Wiedergabe mit vielen Details in harmonischer, reicher Farbgebung mit vielen Rot-, Weiß-, Blau- und Brauntönen. Sotheby's London, 3rd and 4th of March 1997, lot 108 (as Mathys Schoevaerdts)With Spink-Leger, Old Bond Street London, 1998Private Collection, BritainOne of the scenes scenes show the Dutch tradition of butchers parading their finest animals proudly through the streets, set to drum rolls, where the whole town would come out waving banners and to bet on the weight of the animals. The parade took place a week before Easter, on the day of the Guild's patron saint, St. Luke, who was symbolized by the winged ox. It celebrated the guild's most prized cow or bull, which was decorated with gilded horns topped with oranges, as well as ribbons and floral garlands. The celebratory procession was led by pipers and drummers and followed by a chorus of singers and dancers, made up of guild members and townspeople. The celebrations would culminate in the animal being butchered and the meat served at a grand Guild dinner and a large portion of it being given out to the poor people of the town via the church. The phrase: 'The guild ox is on parade', derives from the tradition, meaning 'this will be a real feast!'. The tradition continued well into the 20th century, but gradually disappeared after WWII, due to advent of increasing commercialism. Easter advertising moved inside the butcher's shop, where their best-bred beef would be displayed on platters in shop windows and decorated with flowers and garlands of bacon. Schoevaerdts was a Flemish painter, draughtsman and printmaker who is believed to have been born in Brussels, where he trained with the landscape painter Adriaen Frans Boudewijns. His early works show the influence of the market views and other crowded scenes of Jan Brueghel the Elder, who started the tradition of landscape paintings with decorative scenes in the early 17th century. Schoevaerdts landscapes are also full of anecdotes and delicately painted scenes of peasants travelling, sailing or attending fairs, typically with small figures in detailed poses. Later he came under the influence of the Dutch and Flemish artists who worked in Rome known as the Bamboccianti, after which his landscapes also included backdrops of Italian ports and ruins as in one of the present works.
