        GUIANA – SCHOMBURGK, Sir Robert Hermann (1804-1865). Twelve Views in the Interior of Guiana . London: Whitehead & Co. for Ackerman & Co., 1841. The first edition of a rare and important book of views of Guiana. Schomburgk identified and sent to England the Victoria Regia waterlily, and was awarded the Royal Geographic Society's gold medal for his scientific work. James Morrison, the expedition draftsman, made sketches under the direction of Schomburgk, these were then worked up by Charles Bentley in London, and plates were produced from those finished sketches. Letter-press title-page, dedication to the Duke of Devonshire with his arms printed in gilt, two-page subscribers' list (some occasionally heavy spotting to text leaves throughout, upper corners of preliminaries worn with minor loss). Hand-colored additional lithographed title-page featuring the giant Victoria Regia waterlily, by M. Gauci after Charles Bentley, printed by P. Gauci (some heavy marginal spotting, edges a bit frayed with mall tears affecting the image), and 12 hand-colored lithographed views by George Barnard, Coke Smyth and P. Gauci after Charles Bentley, printed by Gauci and Charles Hullmandel (some mostly marginal spotting, a few marginal tears with early repairs on versos), 12 wood-engraved illustrations by G. P. Nicholls after Charles Blunt, the views all after original sketches by John Morrison, one engraved map by John Murray, hand-colored in outline in red and blue (spotted). Original pictorial paper boards, contemporary cloth spine (worn, soiled). Provenance: with the gift inscription to Thomas Roland from Albert C. Burrage, dated Christmas 1924 on the recto of the front free endpaper. A rare coloured copy of the first edition, published at 2/12/6d uncolored and 4 guineas colored.

As is made clear in the preface, James Morrison (the expedition draughtsman) made sketches under the direction of Schomburgk.
