Verso mit Faserschreiber in Schwarz signiert "Schonzeit", datiert und mit den Maßangaben, auf dem Keilrahmen auf Papier-(Galerie-?)Etikett bezeichnet und betitelt. Wichtiges Gemälde des Künstlers aus der Blütezeit des Fotorealismus, das in seinem goldenen Kolorit einen Aspekt von Schonzeits Serie der "gold paintings", entstanden ab ca. 1998 unter dem Einfluss japanischer Kunst, vorwegnimmt. Ben Schonzeit ist bekannt für seine großformatigen fotorealistischen Gemälde von Alltagsgegenständen, Lebensmitteln, Früchten, Blumen, Gemüse, Tieren oder Porträts von Menschen. Er vergrößert meist die abgebildeten Gegenstände bis in kleinste Details und schärft so die Wahrnehmung. Einige seiner Bilder zeigen in ihrer Überzeichnung Anklänge an den Surrealismus. Ein bemerkenswerter Beitrag zum amerikanischen Fotorealismus war sein bahnbrechender Einsatz der Airbrush-Technik. Er hatte seine ersten Einzelausstellungen im Jahr 1970 bei French & Co. in New York, 1971 in der Galerie DeGestlo in Hamburg und in der Galerie Mikro in Berlin. Internationale Bekanntheit erlangte Schonzeit durch seine Teilnahme an der documenta 5, 1972, mit einer Gruppe neuer Arbeiten, die Jean-Christophe Ammann unter dem Titel "Realismus" zusammen mit amerikanischen Kollegen wie Richard Artschwager, Chuck Close, Richard Estes, Ralph Goings und Duane Hanson den Europäern Franz Gertsch und Gerhard Richter gegenüberstellte. - Ausstellung: Galerie Mikro, Berlin 1971, Kat.-Nr. 7, mit Abb.
