EARLY OIL ON CANVAS BY ELMER SCHOOLEY (1916-2007)

    Est: -

EARLY OIL ON CANVAS BY ELMER SCHOOLEY (1916-2007) Elmer schooley (1916-2007) is new to the secondary market, but in gallery circles he's recognized as an important modernist and a key teacher of art. This explains the high five-figure prices for his work. His reputation as a teacher is constantly confirmed by the many artists who trumpet their experience with Elmer Schooley in their biographies of notable accomplishments. This fine early oil on canvas measures 53 x 46 inches. It seems to depict water flowing steadily but without urgency over large river stones. Mr. Schooley said of his work, ôMy painting honors the integrity of the picture plane in keeping with my modernist perspective and training....". Schooley has been referred to as an important pioneer of Modernism in the Southwest. "I have avoided becoming non-objective by demanding that my paintings have a subject..I work toward an interesting surface quality in the paint that is equally as important as the subject.....I work on a large scale to confront the viewerö (take a look). Elmer Schooley's works are in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Brooklyn Museum, the Library of Congress, the Roswell Museum and Art Center, the Anderson Museum of Contemporary Art, Roswell, Museum of New Mexico, Santa Fe, the Albuquerque Museum, the Dallas Museum of Art and other collections both public and private. (Thank you to TheCollectorsGuide.com) Very good condition.
