Frank Earle Schoonover Sold at Auction Prices

Landscape painter, Illustrator, b. 1877 - d. 1972

(b New Jersey, 1877; d Delaware, 1972) American Illustrator. Known as the “Dean of Delaware Artists”, Schoonover studied under the preeminent American illustrator Howard Pyle at the Drexel Institute in Philadelphia and at Pyle’s summer program in Chad’s Ford on the Brandywine River. He remained very close to Pyle throughout his career, which blossomed as his illustrations were published in a number of magazines and children’s books. Seeking inspiration for his work Schoonover went on long trips, immersing himself in the settings he was to depict. In particular he spent a great deal of time “Out West”, gathering material for the frontier scenes for which he is most famous. Notable works include illustrations for such disparate publications as Clarence E. Mulford’s cowboy series Hopalong Cassidy and Edgar Rice Burroughs’ science fiction novel A Princess of Mars. Ultimately Schoonover followed in the steps of his mentor and established a school of his own. He was also influential in establishing the Delaware Art Museum.

Sotheby’s, New York, sale of June 24, 1988, lot 312. Acquired directly from the above sale. Somerville Manning Gallery, Wilmington, Delaware, by 1989. The Sarah S. Harrison Collection of American Illustration, Greenville, Delaware. By descent to Mason H. Drake. Exhibited "Frank Schoonover, 1877-1972," Society of Illustrators, New York, New York, July 11-August 11, 2001. "Frank Schoonover: Inventing Indians," Sewell C. Biggs Museum of American Art, Dover, Delaware, July 21-October 10, 2004. Literature Laurie York Erskine, “The Man from the North,” in The American Boy, March 1921, p. 7 (illustrated). Louise Schoonover Smith, LeeAnn Dean and John R. Schoonover, Frank E. Schoonover: Catalogue Raisonné, Oak Knoll Press, Newcastle, 2009, Vol. I, p. 328, no. 992 (illustrated). Note Schoonover’s Man from the North, one of the artist's many contributions to books and magazines during America’s “Golden Age of Illustration,” accompanied Laurie York Erskine’s short story of the same name in the March 1921 issue of American Boy. The magazine, published monthly, regaled young readers with stories of action and (oftentimes Western) adventure and was, for its time, the largest periodical for boys in circulation. Schoonover’s own feats of daring—which included excursions to Alaska and Canada, and a stint living amongst the Blackfeet Indians of the northern plains—informed his 75-year career and far-reaching body of work. At 28 x 36 inches, Man from the North echoes the gravity of events depicted. As was often the case, the painting was published with an explanatory caption (“The Life Went Out of the Boy’s Face and He Stood as Rigid as a Totem. Kesinamis is Dead. Kesinamis, My Mother. Kesinamis, the White Otter Woman She is Dead! She Has Gone to the Spirit Place. Kesinamis, My Mother!”)—an evocative shorthand that whetted readers’ appetites and summarized key moments in the text. Schoonover’s image illustrates the story’s dramatic climax; a young boy, overcome with emotion, discovers what he erroneously believes to be the body of his deceased mother. In a restrained palette of cream and mottled white, Schoonover masterfully recreates the tale’s arctic setting and solemn mood. The boy, modeled after the artist’s 4-year-old son, Cortlandt, stands, arms at his side, eyes turned upward. His crimson cheeks offer relief from what is largely a monochromatic composition. With purposeful daubs, Schoonover renders the region’s distinctive forests, pine boughs bending under the weight of heavy snow. The ice-covered lake and landscape beyond speak to inhospitable climes. Schoonover's illustrations–the present painting and Snowstorm at Poor Folks Haven (Lot 47) among them–not only supported a narrative, they stoked readers' imaginations and contributed to a broader culture of western adventure.

The Gift Horse Art Gallery, West Chester, Pennsylvania, by 1967. The Sarah S. Harrison Collection of American Illustration, Greenville, Delaware. Exhibited "Frank E. Schoonover," The Gift Horse Art Gallery, West Chester, Pennsylvania, March 29-April 29, 1967. Literature Courtney Ryley Cooper, “Oklahoma," in Country Gentleman, March 1926, p. 9 (illustrated). Louise Schoonover Smith, LeeAnn Dean and John R. Schoonover, Frank E. Schoonover: Catalogue Raisonné, Oak Knoll Press, Newcastle, 2009, Vol. II, pp. 451-452, no. 1422 (illustrated). Note Snowstorm at Poor Folks Haven (alternatively, Poor Folks Haven, Snow Storm - Now It Was Nearing Christmas) depicts a dramatic episode from Courtney Ryley Cooper's "Oklahoma," serialized in Country Gentleman between March and June 1926. According to a New York Times review (of Cooper's subsequent novel of the same name), this was a "tale of the birth of a State that in one generation has leaped forward at a bound from an infancy of virgin prairie, Indian tepees and scattered bands of grazing cattle into vast wealth, great cities, thronging population, [and] worldwide fame" (September 5, 1926). Schoonover, one of the preeminent illustrators of his generation, contributed multiple images to each installment of "Oklahoma"; the March iteration transported readers to the state's earliest days–specifically, to the Land Rush of 1889, when, by presidential proclamation, the Unassigned Lands (of former Indian Territory) would be open for settlement. Snowstorm at Poor Folks Haven, rendered in a selective palette of white, umber, and icy blue, suggests the Rush was not without hardship. Makeshift tents and Conestoga wagons crowd the composition's middleground; one recent arrival, clutching a bundle of firewood, trudges through the snow. The caption that accompanied Schoonover's illustration ("It was nearing Christmas, snow lay deep; boomers in pore [sic] folks’ haven shivered in their temporary abodes") reinforced the precariousness of westward expansion, while the artist's cornflower skies, visible at some remove, offer viewers (and readers) a glimmer of hope.

        Est: $18,000 - $22,000

Frank Earle Schoonover (1877-1972) oil on canvas original illustration painting titled "A Daughter of the South," 1909. The painting depicts a middle aged woman standing on the columned porch of a Southern home, wearing a black dress and white apron, pointing a revolver at an encroaching mob led by a man armed with a sledgehammer. Signed lower left "Frank E. Schoonover" and dated 1909. This painting, number 382 in the Frank E. Schoonover Catalog Raisonne, was the original illustration for a feature titled "Daughter of the South," published in The Century Illustrated Monthly Magazine, April 1910, authored by Caroline Abbot Stanley. It was captioned, "You Set One Foot on the Porch and I'll Shoot You Like A Dog" (which is also one of the painting's titles in the catalog raisonne). Housed in a painted wood frame with linen matte and stained sight edge. Brass placard with artist name, title, and date affixed to lower frame margin. Sight: 35 3/8" H x 23 3/8" W. Framed: 40 3/8" H x 28 1/4" W. Commentary from the Frank E. Schooner Catalog Raisonne: "After considering the first image sent by Schoonover, the Editorial Editor, R.U. Johnson of The Century Illustrated Monthly Magazine, wrote this letter on April 15, 1909, asking for a change: 'Mr. Gilder and I feel that while this picture of Mr. Schoonover's is a striking one, the woman's face and figure do not indicate the type of Southern lady which is expected in the stories of old Southern families. The story of her feminine gentleness and kindness make an effective contrast to the determination displayed in this scene. Mr. Schoonover has well expressed the determination -- almost too well. Can she not be made less hard, more lovable to look upon, with more Southern high lady style of the kind that goes with the pillars -- perhaps with war-time curls? We are sure Mr. Schoonover can make something very fetching.' Upon receipt of the letter and the painting, the artist re-drew parts of the figure of the woman and added some curls around her face. The enhanced painting was published as a half tone plate engraved by R. Barley." https://www.frankschoonover.org/0-1000/301-400/382-qyou-set-one-foot-on-this-porch-and-ill-shoot-you-like-a-dogq/
