Colorful Painting by Ilya Schor portraying a Rabbi in traditional garb wearing a tallit holding a Sefer Torah at the Bimah (prayer platform) in a Synagogue. Ilya Schor (1904 – 1961) was an artist, a painter, jeweler, engraver, sculptor, and renowned artist of Judaica. Signed lower left, Framed. 76cm. H., 61cm W. Ilya Schor (1904–1961), U.S. metalsmith, painter, and printmaker. Born in Zloczoq, Poland, Schor was the son of a Hasidic painter. Before attending the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw, he worked as an apprentice to an engraver and goldsmith. He continued his studies in Paris before coming to New York in 1941. Schor achieved a reputation as a worker in metal. His jewelry and ritual objects, such as kiddush cups and Torah crowns, are filled with delicate, detailed, and intricate design. He did a great deal of work for ritual use in synagogues, such as doors for the ark of Temple Beth-El, Great Neck, New York. With artists such as Percival Goodman, Seymour Lipton, Ben Shahn, and Milton Horn, Schor contributed work which reflected the post-World War ii Jewish community's renewed interest in the synagogue as both a spiritual and cultural gathering place: original and handcrafted ritual objects, sculpture, painting, and windows emphasized the importance of the synagogue in Jewish community life. Schor's work was reminiscent of pre-Emancipation Jewish craftsmen. His oils and some of the books he illustrated with woodcuts depicted life in the small Jewish communities of his boyhood. His woodcut Fiddler, composed of simple, flat shapes with a minimum of detail, recalls a figure of the Eastern European shtetl. He illustrated The Sabbath: Its Meaning for Modern Man by Abraham Heschel (1951), The Earth Is the Lord's': The Inner World of the Jew in Eastern Europe, also by Heschel. Rather than working in the Abstract Expressionist style of his peers, Schor always remained a narrative, figurative artist who referred to traditional Jewish religious or cultural subject matter, making art in a manner which combined both folk and modernist sensibilities.

His Jewish identity had a profound impact on his work. Schor began his formal arts training by enrolling in the Warsaw Academy of Fine Arts in 1930 and seven years later was awarded a grant by the Polish government to study in Paris. After a few years in Paris, Schor immigrated to the United States as he and his artist wife were forced to flee France in May of 1940. Upon arriving in New York City, Schor dedicated himself to producing work that would keep the memories of the Jewish people of Eastern Europe alive. Painting everyday scenes of the shtetels of his childhood, Schor sought to preserve a way of life that had come under threat. Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel, whose books Schor illustrated, wrote of the artist's work, âIn the stillness of the precious images Ilya Schor has called into being, generations to come will hear the voice and the spirit of eternal Israel, the inwardness and piety of our people of Eastern Europe.â Frame: 17 1/8 x 19 1/4 x 1 3/8 in.

He worked in diverse media – jewelry, metalwork, painting and sculpture. Schor was born in 1904 in Z?oczów in Galicia, later Poland. In 1937, while studying painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw, Schor was awarded a grant to study in Paris. He and his wife, Resia who was also an artist, moved to Paris where he showed his work at the Salon d’Automne in 1938. They later fled the Holocaust in 1941 and immigrated to New York City where they eventually had two daughters. Though he spent twenty years in the United States, Schor’s mind and artistic depictions frequently harkened back to his roots in the small villages of Galicia. Schor’s works are remembrances of a place and time that no longer existed after the Second World War. According to Schor’s daughter, Mira Schor, the work presented here “…is a naturalistic scene of the rural outskirts of his hometown…most likely painted in New York City in the late 1940s or early 1950s.” The vibrant painting portrays the daily tasks of villagers with a loose style and brushwork reminiscent of folk artists of the turn of the century. Centered in the composition is a robust tree, perhaps a nod to the “tree of life,” a traditional Judeo-Christian motif, and one that Schor often utilized.

Ilya Schor was born in Zloczow (Galicia), in the Austrian Empire, later Poland, in 1904. He came from a deeply Hasidic family. His father Naftali Schorr was a folk-artist, painting colorfully illustrated store signs for local merchants. Ilya Schor first trained as an apprentice in metalcrafts and engraving before enrolling at the Warsaw Academy of Fine Arts in 1930 where he studied painting. In 1937, he was awarded a grant by the Polish government to study in Paris. He exhibited successfully at the Salon dAutomne in 1938. Ilya Schor and his artist wife Resia Schor immigrated to the United States in December, 1941, from Marseilles, via Lisbon, after fleeing Paris in late May 1940. Ilya Schor and Resia Schor had two daughters, born in New York City: artist and writer Mira Schor (b. 1950) and noted literary scholar and theorist, Naomi Schor (19432001). In New York City, Ilya Schor began artwork that would keep fresh his memories of life of the Jews of the shtetls of Eastern Europe, working in the many materials and with the numerous skills at his disposal. He worked on major commissions for synagogues in the United States. Schors wood-engraving illustrations for The Earth is The Lords and The Sabbath, both important writings by the renowned philosopher and theologian, Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel, and for Adventures of Mottel The Cantors Son by Sholem Aleichem, have remained in print for over fifty years. Rabbi Heschel wrote of Schors work, In the stillness of the precious images Ilya Schor has called into being, generations to come will hear the voice and the spirit of eternal Israel, the inwardness and piety of our people of Eastern Europe. Schor was also the creator of unique jewelry and small Judaica objects in silver and gold. In later years he also worked on abstract sculptures in brass and copper. Ilya Schor died in New York City in 1961. A retrospective of his work was held at the Jewish Museum (New York) in 1965. Another smaller exhibition of works in varied media, "Life of the Old Jewish Shtetl: Paintings and Silver by Ilya Schor," was held at Yeshiva University Museum in 1975. His works are included in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Jewish Museum (New York), The Jerusalem Great Synagogue Jacob and Belle Rosenbaum Mezuzah Collection, North Carolina Museum of Art, and Sydney Jewish Museum, Sydney, Australia.

Biography Ilya Schor (16 April 1904, in Zloczow 7 June 1961, in New York City) was a multi-faceted artist, a painter, jeweler, engraver, sculptor, and renowned artist of Judaica. Ilya Schor was born in Zloczow (Galicia), in the Austrian Empire, later Poland, in 1904. He came from a deeply Hasidic family. His father Naftali Schorr was a folk-artist, painting colorfully illustrated store signs for local merchants. Ilya Schor first trained as an apprentice in metalcrafts and engraving before enrolling at the Warsaw Academy of Fine Arts in 1930 where he studied painting. In 1937, he was awarded a grant by the Polish government to study in Paris. He exhibited successfully at the Salon dAutomne in 1938. Ilya Schor and his artist wife Resia Schor immigrated to the United States in December, 1941, from Marseilles, via Lisbon, after fleeing Paris in late May 1940. Ilya Schor and Resia Schor had two daughters, born in New York City: artist and writer Mira Schor (b. 1950) and noted literary scholar and theorist, Naomi Schor (19432001). In New York City, Ilya Schor began artwork that would keep fresh his memories of life of the Jews of the shtetls of Eastern Europe, working in the many materials and with the numerous skills at his disposal. He worked on major commissions for synagogues in the United States. Schors wood-engraving illustrations for The Earth is The Lords and The Sabbath, both important writings by the renowned philosopher and theologian, Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel, and for Adventures of Mottel The Cantors Son by Sholem Aleichem, have remained in print for over fifty years. Rabbi Heschel wrote of Schors work, In the stillness of the precious images Ilya Schor has called into being, generations to come will hear the voice and the spirit of eternal Israel, the inwardness and piety of our people of Eastern Europe. Schor was also the creator of unique jewelry and small Judaica objects in silver and gold. In later years he also worked on abstract sculptures in brass and copper.
