Schotel lernte bei Adriaan Meulemans und Martinus Schouman. Sein Oeuvre steht in der Tradition des 17. Jhs. und wurde von Marinemalern des Goldenen Zeitalters wie Willem van de Velde d. Ä. und Ludolf Bakhuyzen inspiriert. Virtuos schilderte er in geistreicher, eindrucksvoller Weise herannahende Stürme, die Gischt und die Naturgewalt des Meeres, die Schiffe mit ihrer Besegelung und Takelage. Schotel took on the same profession as his father; renowned Dordrecht seascape painter Johannes Christianus Schotel (1787-1838). Like his father, he painted sea, river and harbour views in the realist Romantic style and due to his great knowledge of ships and rigging, he even became a teacher at the Dutch Royal Naval Institute in Medemblik. He did not only paint Dutch ships and seascapes, but frequently visited France, Belgium and Germany countries where his works were also greatly appreciated.

        Schotel (Johannes Christiaan, 1787-1838), A seated woman with a basket, monochrome wash, over graphite, on beige coloured wove paper, faintly inscribed lower left, 330 x 215 mm. (13 x 8 1/2 in), unframed Provenance: Iohan Quirijn van Regteren Altena [Lugt 4617] ⁂ The present sheet can be compared both stylistically and thematically with a group of six oval figure studies of men and women, mounted together in one mount, formerly in the collections of Hans van Leeuwen and Charles Ryskamp (see Christie's, Amsterdam, 10th November 1999, lot 229). Other similar examples can be found in the Teyler Musuem, Harleem, as well as the Morgan Library, New York, amongst others.
