The Dutch naval squadron training in the Mediterranean Sea in 1843 one drawing signed, several drawings with annotations lot comprising of 25 drawings: 1 watercolour, 21 washed ink drawings, 2 pencil drawings and a pastel, all unframed, each approx. 24,5x37,5 and 27x25 cm ------ Petrus Johannes Schotel (Dordrecht 1808–Dresden 1865) was a well-known Dutch marine painter, whose paintings can be found in the collections of, amongst others, the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam and Museum Boijmans van Beuningen in Rotterdam. Schotel was taught by his father, the marine painter Johannes Christiaan Schotel, and started a career as a drawing instructor at the Royal Naval College in Medemblik, North Holland, in 1830. In 1840, Schotel accompanied the Dutch naval squadron on drills in the North Sea, and in 1843 he was invited by Prince Henry of the Netherlands to join a drill of the naval squadron to the Mediterranean Sea. Travelling on the frigate The Rhine, under the command of Prince Henry, Schotel had the opportunity to make plenty of drawings and sketches, starting with the ship’s departure at the port of Vlissingen on 2 August 1843 and until their return on 18 October. The drawings offered in this lot give a good impression of their journey. Several bear inscriptions naming the portrayed frigates, the places, manoeuvres, or dates, for example: ‘De Haai resterend voor Gibraltar ’ (The Shark at Rest by Gibraltar), and ‘Zeilorde den 17 aug 1843’ (Sailing Order on 17 August 1843). At their stop at Gibraltar, Schotel received special permission from the Governor of Gibraltar to ‘take landscape sketches of the Rock’; some of these sketches are included in this lot. On his return, Schotel developed some of his sketches into oil paintings, which were purchased, amongst others, by Prince Henry of the Netherlands and became part of the collection of the National Maritime Museum in Amsterdam. A sketch book with marine and landscape studies signed with initials on the inside 'P.J.S' and inscribed on the endpaper 'voor mevrouw Schotel'. 45 sketches on 36 pages, 22x29 cm ------------------ The cover of this sketch album reads 'G. van Emmerik', which indicates that the album originally belonged to Govert van Emmerik (1808-1882), a pupil of Petrus Johannes Schotel. However some missing pages in the album suggest that van Emmerik took out his sketches and gave the album to his teacher. The original initials, the inscription 'mevrouw Schotel' and the quality of the drawings support this theory.
