Cecil Schott "Victorian Dandy" Oil Painting c 1875

      Est: $600 - $900

An English gilt framed oil on board painting depicting a study of a young man wearing a cap and smoking a pipe, apparently a calabash. Inscribed in French: "Á mon ami, A. M. Hague" and signed upper left. Sight area measures approximately 9.75" x 13.75" and frame 13.25" x 17" x 1.25". Total weight 2.52 lbs. The artist was Fanny Cornforth's stepson, whom Rossetti had encouraged to pursue an artistic career, and was a sometime studio assistant to L.F. Watts. His painting entitled "The Four Elders" was exhibited at the Royal Academy in London in 1887. (It is listed as No. 866 in the catalogue for that exhibition, with the following notation: "He was a pupil of L. F. Watts, R.A.") On the back of the painting is the following handwritten comment: "Painted by Cecil Schott at Lower Bank Fish House, Isle of Wight, July 1875." A separate label on the back of the painting notes that it had been framed by Hampstead Art Suppliers, 87 Heath Street, London N.W.3, (Hampstead 2319).
