Julius Schrader (1815 Berlin - 1900 Großlichterfelde): The death of the holy pilgrim Elizabeth of Portugal, Rainha Santa Isabel surrounded and crowned by angels, c. 1840, Watercolor Technique: Watercolor and Pencil on Paper Inscription: Lower middle inscribed on the support: "Schrader". Date: c. 1840 Person: Depicted: Rainha Santa Isabel; Elisabeth von, Portugal (1271 Saragossa - 1336 Estremoz) Elizabeth of Portugal (* 4 January 1271 in Zaragoza, + 4 July 1336 in Estremoz) was Princess of Aragon and Queen of Portugal from 1282 to 1325. After the death of her husband, she entered a convent as a Franciscan nun. Elisabeth's entire life was characterised by deep faith. She devoted herself to prayer, penance and caring for the poor. Her piety was symbolised by the so-called miracle of the roses: According to legend, bread that she secretly carried under her veil for the poor turned into roses when she was surprised by her suspicious husband. Her love of peace and her commitment to reconciliation characterised her life. An outstanding example is her pilgrimage to Estremoz in 1336, when, despite illness and old age, she rode to prevent a war between her son Alfonso IV of Portugal and his father-in-law, the King of Castile. As before, she placed herself unarmed between the two armies and reached an agreement. Elisabeth died shortly after this last pilgrimage. She was initially buried in the monastery of Santa Clara-a-Velha in Coimbra, but was later moved to the monastery of Santa Clara-a-Nova. Her saintly life and peacemaking were honoured by the Catholic Church and she is still a popular saint in Portugal today. Julius Friedrich Anton Schrader, 1815 - 1900

    Est: €2,500 - €3,500

Julius Friedrich Anton Schrader, 1815 - 1900, HALBAKT EINES JUNGEN MÄDCHENS MIT HÜNDCHENS IN IDYLLISCHER LANDSCHAFT Öl auf Leinwand. 112 x 96,5 cm. (880611)
