Joseph Schranz (Maltese/German, 1803-c.1866) A panoramic view of Constantinople and the Bosphorus from above Scutari, looking towards the Golden Horn signed lower left ‘Schranz’ watercolour 13.5 x 18.5cm The present watercolour is a rare and important work in the oeuvre of Joseph Schranz, a talented yet elusive artist who made his name in Ottoman Istanbul on the eve of the Crimean War. It is a significant example of his studies in Constantinople, showing an extensive, atmospheric view of both sides of the city taken from above Scutari (Üsküdar), on the eastern shore of the Bosphorus. Joseph Schranz was the son of the artist Anton Schranz the Elder (1769–1839) from Ochsenhausen (now in Germany but then part of Austria) and grew up in Spain and then Malta. Despite being traditionally identified as German, he likely considered himself Spanish. By the mid-1830s, he had settled in Constantinople, where he produced sparkling watercolours and lithographs for a European clientele that became increasingly fascinated with Ottoman Turkey around the outbreak of the Crimean War (1853-1856). However, Schranz also had local admirers and his work was collected by Sultan Abdulmejid I himself. A pencil drawing by Schranz, made from a similar viewpoint, is in the collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum (SD.958).

      • Schranz - Bachi-Bouzouks
        Aug. 31, 2019

        Schranz - Bachi-Bouzouks

        Est: $200 - $400

This hand-finished color lithograph is from Joseph Schranz's Album de Constantinope. The work was published in Paris by Frick Freres. The lithograph was completed in stone by A. Bayot. This is a richly coloured image of the Bachi-Bouzouks, the Ottoman Empire's mercenary cavalry. Bachi-bouzouk or bazibozuklar meant "not having the same hats or heads", referring to the irregular nature of their clothing and arms They were also, inevitably, undisciplined and seem to have come and gone as they liked. They were mercenary cavalry, quite tribal and quite deadly, and not unlike the Cossacks. The irregular nature of their military behavior and commitment amused the French, for whom "Bachi-Bouzouk" became a term of derision, nevertheless, as illustrated here in Schranz' portrait, the bachi-bouzouk were tough, heavily armed fighters, more pirates of the plains than regular cavalry, intimidating and effective.
