          Charles Schreyvogel White Eagle Bronze

          Est: $6,000 - $8,000

10" by 19" by 23". Title is White Eagle. Copyright 1899, number 16/18. Charles (Carl) Schreyvogel (1861 - 1912) was active/lived in New Jersey, New York. Charles Schreyvogel is known for Indian, cowboy and military genre painting, miniatures. One of the better known painters of Western subject matter, Charles Schreyvogel was especially interested in military life in the days of the disappearing frontier. His western scenes were usually subjects with landscape as the backdrop, and his depictions of Indians were that of people with dignity and pride. "His favorite theme was warfare between intruding whites and Indians defending their ancestral homelands." (Baigell, 321) He spent most of his life as an impoverished artist and then earned what seemed like overnight fame. "When Remington died in 1909, Schreyvogel wore the mantle of premier Western artist for the brief remainder of his life." (Zellman, 557) Schreyvogel was born in New York City and grew up in a poor family of German immigrant shopkeepers on the Lower East Side and also spent much of his childhood in Hoboken, New Jersey. He found work in art-related trades including as a Meerschaum pipe carver, goldsmith, and lithographer. He taught himself to draw, but he studied with H. August Schwabe at the Newark Art League. By 1880, he was teaching drawing and painting and used the roof of his apartment in Hoboken as his studio. In 1887, with the help of several patrons, especially Dr. William Redwood Fisher, he went to Munich, Germany for three years and studied with Carl Von Marr and Frank Kirchbach. Dr. Fisher encouraged the artist to take an interest in western subject matter. Returning to the United States, he had bad health and was advised to go West to regain strength, but he didn't have the money for several years so he satisfied his aroused interest by sketching cowboys and Indians he saw in Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show. In 1893, Schreyvogel first went West, visiting Arizona and the Ute Reservation in southwest Colorado. He quickly regained his health and excelled as a horseman. He also learned sign language to communicate with the Indians to persuade them to pose for him. But the resulting paintings didn't sell in the East, so he, having married Louise Walther, earned money with portrait painting of miniatures on ivory while continuing to do western painting. In the 1890s and 1900s, he made additional trips West, including the Blackfeet Reservation in Montana. In 1901, his work, My Bunkie, won the first place honor, the Thomas B. Clarke Prize, at the National Academy of Design, and a market for his western paintings and sculpture was set. My Bunkie was a rejected painting that even his local cafe owner had refused to hang, and despairing, he had left it at the Academy. He was so sure he would get no recognition that he had not even bothered to leave his address. He worked from studios in Hoboken, New Jersey, and from a farm in West Kill, New York, and his Academy success was followed by winning a bronze medal in Paris and another at the Pan-American Exposition in Buffalo. The money he earned from this recognition allowed him to do more traveling in the West where he gathered material for his studio painting, many of them military scenes. Most of his canvases were large, but he was such a meticulous painter that he only completed about seventy-five western paintings. He also did some watercolors, and many of his paintings were reproduced during his lifetime. He died in Hoboken from blood poisoning from a chicken bone lodged in his gum. His studio and collection are on permanent display at the Cowboy Hall of Fame in Oklahoma City.

3 Piece Charles Schreyvogel Western Artwork

          Est: $2,000 - $4,000

Charles Schreyvogel, 1861-1912 who's work 'My Bunkie' hangs in 'The Met'. Three piece set includes two framed and matted under glass platinum prints titled, "How Kola" and" "A Beeline for Camp" as well as a framed under glass Shaw Prize Dinner for the Salmagundi Club of New York. Beginning in 1904 and continuing for forty years, Samuel T. Shaw sponsored a purchase prize for the Salmagundi Club's Annual Exhibition of Oil Paintings. He proved a lithographic print of the winning painting signed by all members of the club attending the informal dinner in honor of the winner, and each member received a copy. This piece contains over 3 dozen signatures of members from the US's oldest Arts Club (see photos) After sketching for Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show in NY, he was able to spend 1893 in the West. For 5 months he sketched at the Colorado Ute reservation. He then continued as a lithographic artist while his paintings of Western Army life did not sell. One of these paintings " My Bunkie" he could not dispose of either as a painting or lithograph. He offered a restaurant on consignment, where it was hung in a corner. Later Schreyvogel took it back and entered it in the 1900 National Academy Exhibition. "My Bunkie" won the highest prize of $300. Until then no one had heard of Schreyvogel, however now he was immediately famous. He went back out west again sketching troopers and Native Americans in the Dakotas. His output was limited to a few major works a year due to the number of research trips and the size of the paintings. Some of his illustrations were marketed in the form of "platinum prints", . Please see photos. The group has been individually framed and matted. and measure approx 3" X 28" each

At the time of his unexpected death from blood poisoning in 1912, Charles Schreyvogel was considered one of the most popular artists of the Old West, revered for his nostalgic images of a disappearing frontier. His fame arrived late in life when his painting My Bunkie won first prize at the 1900 National Academy of Design exhibition, yet he had trained since his youth as an artist. Born in 1861 to German immigrants settled in New York City, Schreyvogel apprenticed during the 1870s to a gold engraver and a lithographer before enrolling in the Newark Art League. With the financial assistance of his brothers, he traveled abroad and studied from 1886-1890 at the Munich Royal Academy, developing an interest in realism and genre scenes. The watershed moment in Schreyvogel's career occurred back home in 1893 when he attended Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show and sketched, for the first time, the ideals of his childhood dreams: cowboys and Indians. So entranced was he with these new subjects that soon afterward, he visited the Ute Reservation in Colorado -- an opportunity to photograph and paint local legends and begin collecting western artifacts as props for compositions. He interviewed many veterans of the plains wars, including officers, cavalrymen, and Native Americans, and gathered details about their experiences. These tales deeply inspired Schreyvogel's work, leading him to focus primarily on the army of the American west. His insistence on thorough preliminary research prompted future trips to the Dakotas and limited his production, ultimately fewer than 100 paintings. Ironically, chief rival Frederic Remington in 1903 challenged the historical accuracy of his Custer's Demand; Schreyvogel, however, supported by notables including Theodore Roosevelt and the wife of

A trapper with his horse, together they share the last remnants of the water supply. This archetypal version of the Lonesome Cowboy as a group of figures modelled and cast in bronze originally served the artist merely as a study model, after which he developed the painting of the same name, \"The Last Drop\", at the turn of the century, now in the Tacoma Art Museum (Tacoma, Washington). Charles Schreyvogel, born and died in the United States, came to Munich between 1886 and 1890 to study under his countryman Carl Marr, who later on became director of the academy of arts. Back in Hoboken he travelled from 1893 several times to the western part of the states to the Indian reservations there. The motifs he found there became his life theme, for which he is still highly regarded and sought after today. He became the painter of the Indians and cowboys, who documented the life in the American Wild West. Many of his works are exhibited in the museums there today. The bronze \"The Last Drop\", one of only very few three-dimensional pictorial works by the artist, went from being a mere study object to becoming famous in its own right. The numbered edition, produced in the New York foundry, can be found in numerous museums in the USA, including the Rockwell Museum of Western Art, Corning, New York and the Museum of Western Art, Denver, Colorado.
