      Ivory. A figure of Emperor Napoleon I with sword, opened map, and spyglass in his hands. His uniform crafted in great detail. On a round base. On a wooden pedestal, the obverse with inlaid crowned monogram framed by leaves. The reverse inscribed "N. Schrödl f". Wooden base with losses. Height 24 cm and 17 cm (figure), respectively. Norbert Schrödl was active in many European cities, among his clients were the Russian imperial family, Napoleon III, the Duke of Hamilton, and the Rothschild family. Schrödl f. 1865’ Total dimensions, framed: 23 x 18.5 cm Dimensions relief: 16 x 11 cm Good condition This portrait was created by the German sculptor Norbert Schrödl (1815-1890). It is signed by the artist (left rim) and dated to 1865, and depicts the portrait of Mathilde von Balan. Rendered in plaster mass, it is a fine portrait of a lady in noble dress and beautiful, rich hair decoration. Verso are two badges with the inscriptions written in hand, translated from German: the father of Mathilde von Balan married Emilie von Sybel, she was the sister of Luise von Seydlitz and Heinrich Alexander v. Sybel. The mother was née Brügelmann’, and ‘Mathilde von Balan in the first marriage married to von der Heydt. Then to Adolf von Bulow’. The plaster relief is in good condition, minimal soiling of the surface is visible. The total dimensions, including the frame, are 23 x 18.5 cm, and the dimensions of the relief are 16 x 11 cm.
