HERMANN SCHÜTZ Konstanz/Bodensee-Wasserflug 1913. Konstanz is a university town located at the western end of Lake Constance called "Der Bodensee" in German in the southwest corner of Germany, bordering Switzerland and situated on the banks of the Rhine River. Konstanz is also the birthplace of Count Ferdinand von Zeppelin, constructor of the famous Zeppelin airships. But it's not airships being hailed in this Schultz poster it's a Bodensee flying boat air show. The main event of the show was a 200-kilometer flight to test the endurance of new models to see which would prove most useful to the German navy. The strong, allegorical image is literally that of a colossus holding the power of flight in his hands. Three bi-wing hydro-airplanes are depicted, and the one in-flight appears to be a Curtis craft on floats. An interesting historical aviation-related sidenote: because it practically lies within Switzerland, just one kilometer from the Swiss border, Konstanz was not bombed by the Allied Forces during World War II.
