      Christian Schule (1764 Copenhagen - 1816 Leipzig): Portrait of the French general Marshal Lannes (1769-1808), Jean Lannes, prince de Sievers, duc de Montbello, 1807, Stipple engraving Technique: Stipple engraving on Paper, mounted on Paper Inscription: Titled below the image in the printing plate with the sitter's name and "F.W.Nettling sc. L. 1803". Numbered at the top: "7 / No. 6". In the lower right corner of the plate life data of the sitter in lead. Very nice portrait of Jean Lannes (1769 Lectour - 1809 in Kaiserebersdorf near Vienna). He was Maréchal d'Empire and one of the closest friends of Napoléon Bonaparte. He stood out for his bravery in the crossing of the Po and the bridge of Lodi, as well as in the battle of Bassano and the storm of Pavia, where he was promoted to 'Général de brigade'. He fought with distinction in the siege of Mantua and in the battle of Arcole. Napoleon said of him, who rose from peasant son and common soldier to marshal: "...I met a dwarf, but I lost a giant." Schule fec. a. F. 1809", "Ansicht des Hafens von Boulogne". Date: 1809 Description: View of the French port city of Boulogne-sur-Mer in the north of France. In the foreground, military units can be seen striding towards the sea. Then on the shore numerous boats, in the middle ground whole formations of warships just leaving the harbour. The depiction refers to Napoleon's planned invasion in 1804, when he assembled an army of 150,000 men on the Channel coast near Boulogne. Numerous transport ships were built to carry out the crossing. In August 1805, however, the camp at Boulogne was broken off because of the opening of the war by Austria, and the French army was moved in rapid marches to the Danube.
