Above a city gate one of the attacked holds up a white flag, the city surrenders to its attackers. Edouard Schuler (Strasbourg about 1805 - Baden-Baden 1882) was a German-French steel engraver, lithographer and copper engraver. He worked in Strasbourg and Karlsruhe. GEO reference: Elsa. Date: 19th century Description: In the dining room of an elegantly furnished house, a party meets for a festive get-together. At the table sits a young lady who reaches for the champagne bottle on the table and is courted by a young gentleman while another applauds. In the middle of the room is a displeased-looking man in uniform who resolutely opposes one of the revelers. The quiet confrontation contrasts sharply with the relaxed mood of those seated at the table or with the two figures in the background, where a youth is wooing a bashful maid. He has placed his right arm on the richly decorated armrest. As if he had just entered, his dark coat lies carelessly underneath him on the chair, his gloves he holds in his hand. The dark jacket with a large collar is buttoned carelessly - the middle button has been forgotten. Lamartine looks seriously over his shoulder to the side. At the table sits a young lady who reaches for the champagne bottle on the table and is courted by a young gentleman while another applauds. In the middle of the room is a displeased-looking man in uniform who resolutely opposes one of the revelers. The quiet confrontation contrasts sharply with the relaxed mood of those seated at the table or with the two figures in the background, where a youth is wooing a bashful maid.
