Scratched signed, dated and titled 'Schumacher Roma 63'. The present work is registered in the Emil-Schumacher-Stiftung, Hagen. Emil Schumacher is considered a pioneer of gestural abstraction, in which colour, materiality and the traces of the painting process are condensed into an independent pictorial language. The artist describes this process as follows: “The colours usurp forms, the signs demand colours - by letting myself be carried away, I gain my picture” (Emil Schumacher, quoted from Ernst-Gerhard Güse (ed.), in: Emil Schumacher, The Experience of the Unknown, Ostfildern 2012, p.75). In Roma VIII, his characteristic use of intense earth tones is evident, especially the warm rust-red that dominates here, reminiscent of the ancient walls and the archaic atmosphere of the eternal city. The contrasting use of white and grey tones in the upper part of the picture creates a deep spatial effect, almost as if the viewer's gaze is sweeping over the historic ruins and into the sky. The sculptural, relief-like structure of the impasto layers of paint and the visible traces of the artist's tools lend the painting a material presence. The work impressively demonstrates Schumacher's ability to use colour and form in a way that evokes emotions and memories without resorting to narrative or figurative elements. The painting is not only a homage to Rome, but also a reflection on time and transience as they are in the monumental remains of the ancient city.
