      Paul Richard Schumann (German/Texas, 1876-1946)

      Est: $4,000 - $6,000

Paul Richard Schumann (German/Texas, 1876-1946), "Morning Mist: Galveston, Texas", 1943, oil on canvas board, signed lower right, handwritten label with artist and title en verso, pencil-inscribed with artist, title and date on backing paper, 11 3/4 in. x 9 in., framed. Note: Known as the “Interpreter of the true Texas Gulf Coast,” Paul Richard Schumann spent his career studying the splendor of his maritime muse through the means of paint and canvas. In May of 1917, the San Antonio Express quoted Schumann, “In the Gulf of Mexico, we have a great deal more color than in the so-called Blue Pacific. The tropical colorings cannot be painted in words. The tints breathe warmth and are as delicate as anything one might imagine and they are ever changing. Every cloud finds its reflection of a different color, and the tints change with the depth of the water.” Schumann was born in Germany in 1876 but his family moved to Galveston, Texas when he was a young boy. In Galveston Schumann studied under artist and marine painter Julius Stockfleth until he developed his own impressionist style of painting en plein air, often utilizing his fingers and palette knife to capture the movement of the everchanging Gulf waters. Schumann was a prolific artist and taught private lessons in his studio thereby supporting his family. He was a member of the Southern States Art League, Galveston Art League, Texas Fine Arts Association, New Orleans Art Association and the Springfield, Illinois Art Association. The painting offered here is an archetypal work by Schumann depicting a sailboat with a smaller rowboat floating in the foreground as the men aboard the two vessels continue their daily toil. Shadows of other boats can be seen in the hazy distant horizon. Working with a palette knife, Schumann expertly captured the choppy waters and foggy skies.

Schumann Artist's label verso Born in Germany, Paul Schumann first came to Texas in 1881, eventually settling at Galveston. He studied under Galveston ship painter Julius Stockfleth and became a well-known marine painter, although he also painted in West Texas and New Mexico. Schumann was a member of the Southern States Art League, the Texas Fine Arts Association, and the Galveston Art League. As each new example of Schumann's work surfaces, a steady reassessment of his talents is occurring among collectors and Texas art historians. Originally seen simply as a painter of souvenirs for tourists of the Galveston coast, today Schumann's skill in handing the palette knife in particular continues to attract notice. Moreover, conservation efforts in the cleaning of Schumann's paintings--especially the interstices--have revealed his subtle yet arresting sense of color. This is especially true in his paintings such as Sunlit Waters. This painting is strikingly similar to a painting in the Panhandle-Plains Historical Museum's collection that recently received conservation treatment. Schumann's palette-knife technique anticipates the paintings of more recent artists such as Wayne Thiebaud in San Francisco. In the palette-knife paintings of both Schumann and Thiebaud, the heavy impasto "feels" almost like cake frosting.

Shumann spent a brief time painting in New York and the East. His studio was in Galveston, where he spent most of his time, often painting in the open air. In his oils he made extensive use of the palette knife with a singular effect. "Had (Schumann) been an artist along the East Coast instead of the Gulf of Mexico, he would have been known all over the world. He is doing for the Gulf Coast what Winslow Homer did for Maine." - "Young, Texas Painters, Sculptors and Graphic Artists" by John and Deborah Powers.
