Christian Schussele was born 16 April 1824 in Guebwiller, Alsace. He is thought to have studied in Strasbourg and Paris, where his training as an academic painter also seems to have included some experimentation with lithography. He immigrated to America at mid-century, settling in Philadelphia in the 1850s. There he began to work in chromolithography--mechanical color printing--and soon returned to painting, his primary interest. He achieved some recognition for his highly expressive, although often overly romantic and sentimental, genre and history scenes. His skills at creating well-modeled, solidly constructed forms were widely admired. About 1863, he was attacked by palsy in the right hand. In 1865, he went abroad and underwent severe treatment with no apparent benefit. On his return, in 1868, he was elected to fill the chair, then founded, of drawing and painting in the Pennsylvania Academy, which he held until his death. Poor health forced him to reduce his activity as a painter and printmaker, but he was able to sustain his.Teaching at the Pennsylvania Academy, selecting Thomas Eakins as his assistant in 1876. Schussele's academic strengths made him on one of the Academy's most important instructors, and he continued teaching until his death in 1879.

Although primarily known as a teacher at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, Christian Schussele was also a painter of portraits and history and genre paintings. He served as a professor of drawing and painting at the Academy, emphasizing the figure, from 1868 until 1879, when he died. Schussele was born in 1824 in Alsace Lorraine. Before arriving in Philadelphia in 1848, he had been educated in art in Strasbourg and Paris. While he began his career with wood engraving and lithography, Schussele was able to become a full-time painter in 1854. John Sartain, father of painter William Sartain, made a popular print of a Schussele painting, freeing him financially. Schussele dated 1861.  It has definitely experienced some fading over the years. but it gives it a wonderful antique patina.  Christian Schussele (born 16 April 1824 in Guebwiller , Alsace 20 August 1879 in Merchantville, New Jersey ) was an American artist and teacher, and is credited with designing the American Medal of Honor. He studied under Adolphe Yvon and Paul Delaroche 1842-1848 and then came to the United States . Here, for some time, he worked at chromolithography which he had also pursued in France . Later he devoted himself almost entirely to painting. It measures approximately 29.5" high by 35" across.

The print is in very good used condition and appearance considering its age. The heavy solid wood frame has some chips and scratches. The print shows some fading due to time.           Christian Schussele (American (born France), 1824-1879), "Children with Dog and Pigeons on Stoop"-1865, oil on canvas, signed and dated lower left "C. Schussele." Painting depicts three children posed in a triangular formation on the front steps of a building, at lower right the youngest female child is perched on the lowest step and wears a loose fitting dress with lace neckline and embraces a small brown dog, possibly daschound, the child on the left is male and wears a button down shirt tucked into pleated pants and black shoes, his left hand is extended and releasing bird seed just in front of the small girl on the step below, the third child is female and stands above the other two dressed in a white gown with blue bows at either shoulder and black boots, she holds a green book in her left hand, in the foreground three pigeons peck at seeds dropped by the male child, vines and blooming red flowers frame the left hand side of the canvas while a red textile and a hoop and stick for hoop rolling frame the right hand side. Framed approximately 46" x 39". Unframed approximately 40" x 33".
