Thomas Schütte is a German artist who is best known for his versatile sculptures, installations and architectural models. He studied at the Academy of Art in Düsseldorf from 1973 to 1981, where he learnt under Fritz Schwegler and Gerhard Richter, among others. Schütte's work is characterised by a great diversity in style and medium, often with a critical view of social and political issues. His best-known works include the series of larger-than-life aluminium figures 'Große Geister' (1989-1990) and the monumental bronze sculpture 'Mann im Matsch' (2009). Schütte has received numerous international awards, including the Golden Lion at the Venice Biennale (2005). His works are represented in important collections and museums such as the Tate Modern in London and the Museum of Modern Art in New York. The garland as art To this day, Schütte does not seem to want to limit himself to one medium. He designed fabric garlands as the first hybrid form between interior design and art. Due to their nature and the way they are displayed, they seem to become part of the architecture of the room. The garland here measures over four metres in total and consists of several red fabric triangles strung together. Decorative garlands are usually hung as room or table decorations, especially on festive occasions. Here, as can be seen in the picture, the work adorns the curator's office of the 'Westkunst' exhibition. At the age of just 23, Schütte was invited by Kasper König and Laszlo Glotzer to take part in this famous exhibition in Cologne in 1981 and three years later in 'Von hier aus' in Düsseldorf. Both helped Schütte to great success. Kasper König and Thomas Schütte Thomas Schütte and Kasper König have a long-standing collaboration characterised by mutual respect and artistic recognition. König has presented Schütte's work in several important exhibitions. In 1989, König showed the 'Red Garland' in the Frankfurt Portikus as a wall frieze in the exhibition 'On Kawara - Wieder und Wider'. The Japanese artist's 'DatePaintings' are presented together with 24 artworks by other artists. In 2010, König shows his collection in an exhibition at Museum Ludwig with the artist's garland. One year later, Schütte is represented in the exhibition ''Vor dem Gesetz'' at Museum Ludwig. In 2018, the fabric work is shown again at Thomas Fischer in Berlin as part of a presentation of König's collection. SCHÜTTE, THOMAS 1954 Oldenburg Title: Olga's Wallpaper (for Parkett 47). Date: 1997. Technique: Colour lithograph. handmade Indian laid paper. Depiction Size: 93 x 58cm. Sheet Size: 101 x 68,5cm. Notation: Signed, dated and numbered. Publisher: Parkett-Verlag, Zurich (publisher). Number: 1/60. Frame: Framed. Condition: Edge of the laid paper occasionally with minimal creases due to the manufacturing process. Edge minimally discoloured. Verso mounted. Otherwise very good condition. With Parkett magazine. "Thomas Schütte's oeuvre possesses a rare quality: It is contemporary without being modernist. It possesses subjectivity, but a subjectivity devoid of egoism. It possesses versatility of expression along with the rigor of a program it sometimes hides and sometimes reveals. Schütte's concern is the representation of the human condition as it is right now. But what fascinates me is the fact that he is not interested in either a utopian or a catastrophic future, or why he doesn't drift into golden ages located in some imaginary past. Schütte is a realist: He represents what he sees using materials directly linked to that vision, materials anchored in the literalness of the image." Bartomeu Mari, Parkett no. 47, 1996. Mixed media with spray varnish and acrylic, mounted on backing cardboard. (Around 1980). Ca. 128 x 111 cm. • Thomas Schütte is one of the most important artists in Germany, with an œuvre spanning many genres • The motif of the stage is central to his work • The Sculpture Hall of the Thomas Schütte Foundation in Neuss is dedicated to the artist's sculptural works • The private museum "Bourse de commerce" of the collector François Pinault in Paris also houses a large number of works by Thomas Schütte • The diverse mediums used in Schütte's œuvre follow a clear structure and are mutually dependent. Thus, contents and motifs emerge in different forms. The large-format lacquer painting on paper "Bühne" (Stage) takes up a subject that is central to Schütte's work. Stages appear in the artist's oeuvre in architectural models as well as in drawings. This reveals an early passion, for Schütte already spent a considerable amount of time in the class for stage design during his studies at the Düsseldorf Art Academy. Schütte's particular predilection for staging is reflected above all in his sculptural spatial installations. Schütte's works have been shown in important retrospectives in recent years, for example at the Haus der Kunst in Munich (2009), the Reina Sofía in Madrid (2010) and the Castello di Rivoli in Turin (2012). A large number of Thomas Schütte's works are housed in the private museum of the collector François Pinault in Paris.
