Alexander Johann Gottlieb Petrovitch Schwabe Russian, 1818-1872 "Neptune" with his Groom in a Stable

      Est: $5,000 - $8,000

Alexander Johann Gottlieb Petrovitch Schwabe Russian, 1818-1872 "Neptune" with his Groom in a Stable Signed Schwabe and dated 1847 (ll); inscribed in Russian on the reverse Oil on canvas 14 1/4 x 19 7/8 inches (36.2 x 50.5 cm) Provenance: Marjorie Merriweather Post, Washington, D. C. Acquired from Mrs. Post by a member of her family By descent in the same family to the present owner Note: The inscription on the reverse identifies "Neptune" as a horse belonging to the Grand Duke Nikolai Nikolaevich. Considering the date of the painting, this would probably be the elder son (1831-1891) of Tsar Nicholas I. According to a member of Mrs. Post's family, this painting was hung for some time in a room on her yacht, "The Sea Cloud." C
