SCHWEITZER ALBERT: (1875-1965) SCHWEITZER ALBERT: (1875-1965) Alsatian theologian, musician, philosopher & physician, Nobel Peace Prize winner 1952. A highly unusual signed ink handprint of Albert Schweitzer’s right hand on a sheet of the pale blue printed stationery of chirologist Maia Noel, signed (‘Albert Schweitzer’) by Schweitzer and dated 22nd May 1965 in his hand. The signature and date have faded considerably, although the handprint remains bold with many of the lines of the palm, fingers and thumb clearly visible. Laid down to card and with some light overall wrinkling, G Maia Noel (or Adda Nary) had chirology practices in Paris and Saint-Tropez where the character and the future of a person was studied through the morpho-psychological examination of their handprint.

Burr, thanking her on behalf of the hospital staff for having sent a copy of Woman's Own, and further remarking 'Dr. Schweitzer apologises for not writing personally, but he faces an amount of mail as never before, which tires his eyes'. SCHWEITZER ALBERT: (1875-1965) Alsatian theologian, musician, philosopher & physician, Nobel Peace Prize winner 1952. A.L.S., Albert Schweitzer, two pages, oblong 8vo, Gunsbach, 22nd February 1931, to Martha Hinrichsen, in German. Schweitzer declares that his correspondent has pleased him, and thanks her for a photograph of a 'gorgeous painting' of Johann Sebastian Bach which he didn't have previously and is exactly what he requires for a thematic catalogue. Schweitzer continues to recall an anecdote, 'When I was writing my Bach around 1903-6, I asked the Peters [publishing] House to make their Bach edition available to me (i.e. the works of Bach as they appeared with Peters) so that I could list the works in my book…..with the same numbers that Peters used, which is certainly not without interest for the publisher. Unfortunately, they didn't agree to this, which I always regret'. Some light creasing to the edges, and two former file holes and small tears to the left edge, professionally restored. About VG As a music scholar and organist Schweitzer studied the music of German composer Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750) and published a French edition of J. S. Bach, Le Musicien-Poete in 1905, with enlarged German (1908) and English (1911) translations published in the following years.

Dating 1940's-50's there are many multiple page letters in French written by and signed by Schweitzer as well as Secretarially signed letters and notes.Other Ephemera is included as well. Many of the pages are written on tissue like letterhead, so edges are fraying and fragile. Needs to be examined and transcribed for maximum interest but this seems to be a very important group withmedical reference throughout.

Nobel Peace Prize winner ALBERT SCHWEITZER (1875-1965), estate from the provenance of his secretary EMMY MARTIN with around 70 letters and 25 postcards, 7 notebooks, partly signed photos or prints and stamps, a bust of Schweitzer by Prof. Fritz Behn, the correspondence with the artist about the commissioning of a statue in Günsbach, to be erected after his death, the record with his Nobel Lecture from 1954 Part I in German edition, records with the works of Johann Sebastian Bach played by Schweitzer, books and more. The letters and postcards included i.a.: Numerous letters to Emmy Martin (mostly in French), including his declaration of sole ownership of all of his letters and manuscripts that Mrs. Emmy Martin owns (1931) and regarding contributions to Emmy Martin (1933), some letters to Dr. Hans Martin, correspondence with Berta Schleicher (especially postcards), of whom there is also a duplicate of her speech on the 90th birthday of Albert Schweitzer. The estate also includes a report by Schweitzer about his encounter with Rudolf Steiner in 1922 and his 1921 article about Rosa Luxemburg's thoughts in prison. It is worth mentioning the copy of a letter in French to Queen Elizabeth II. The estate contains numerous pictures that depict Albert Schweitzer's life in Lambarene with the locals and his colleagues. Other photos show him writing his writings, as a thinker or playing the organ, and with his colleague Emmy Martin, often with dedications. Some photos show him meeting Schopenhauer, Queen Elisabeth of Belgium or the Japanese doctor Dr. Isao Takahashi. Recordings in Frankfurt (Goethe Prize) are also available. A woman Erica Anderson from New York is mentioned as a photographer on the back of some pictures. Also included a membership card for the Albert Schweitzer Association with Emmy Martin as an honorary member. We ask you to inspect this estate in detail.

Remarkable archive of unpublished material relating to Schweitzer and a proposed book called A Jungle Chronicle, all unsigned, including: a typed and heavily edited manuscript; a typed manuscript of a possible final draft; a mock-up of art for the dust jacket; 100 captioned glossy photographs; and 17 letters by one of Schweitzer's nurses, Gloria Coolidge. The typed draft manuscript is 317 unbound pages, 8.5 x 11, with a title page reading: "A Jungle Chronicle by Albert Schweitzer and his associates, Translated and edited with an introduction by Charles R. Joy. Boston, The Beacon Press, 1952." The lengthy draft contains 34 chapters by various contributors, including 18 by Schweitzer and six by Coolidge, and is heavily edited and hand-corrected throughout by Joy. Chapter titles include: "Famine, Dysentery and a New Hospital," "A Medical Journey in the Jungle and the Steppe," "The Plantation and Hospital in 1933," "Life and Death at Lambarene," "Wild Beasts and Tropical Diseases," and "Doctor Schweitzer."The second typed manuscript is 380 unbound carbon pages, 8.5 x 11, with an identical title page. The text incorporates the corrections penned throughout the draft manuscript, and was possibly intended as a final version for publication. The 100 photos measure 8 x 8 and are affixed to larger pages with typed captions, and depict a variety of aspects of life in Lambarene, including many of Schweitzer himself, the grounds of the hospital, wildlife, local children and adults, patients at the hospital, and medical personnel. The cover art mock-up uses a similar 7 x 9.5 photo of the grounds, with the title and authorship information hand-painted in white. The exceptional collection of 17 letters are from Gloria Coolidge to Charles R. Joy, dated between 1949 to 1952, totaling 45 pages; included with these are typescripts of four prospective chapters for the book and retained carbons of some of Joy's replies. Some of the letters are written from Schweitzer's home in Gunsbach, Alsace, and most mention Dr. Schweitzer. A letter of April 9, 1949, in part: "Dr. Schweitzer is of course tired after his past nine, strenuous years in Lambaréné, and yet he allows himself, as ever, far too little rest. Madame Martin and I are a little worried about his trip to America knowing how over-talkative or time-consuming visitors fatigue him with their conversations when they ought to be quiet. Though he does not let it be known I am sure that such distractions are especially hard on someone whose mind is absorbed frequently in philosophie and scientific thought. When he asks me occasionally to walk a ways down the road with him, I make a point of not talking at all as I know how much a relief it is to him. I hope his special friends who will be with him in America will help in warding off imposing admirers and some of the reporters and photographers whom he has a genuine dislike for though he is much too polite to them." Another, in part: "A little while ago at the breakfast table he told us a story I thought you might like. There was evidently a steam shovel here on the main road somewhere. A young woman looking at it expressed her amazement that such a remarkable machine could exist." In overall very good to fine condition. Joy was a prominent Unitarian minister who became widely known for his translations of Schweitzer's works, publishing eight different books either by or about him. Joy was also involved with the Unitarian Service Committee, and helped to provide funding to save Schweitzer's hospital in 1946 while it was on the verge of closing. A fascinating archive of unpublished material.

Martin further states that Schweitzer will only be staying for a few weeks before returning to Lambarene and, although tired, is in good health despite having fallen and fractured his little finger which has prevented him from playing the organ. Schweitzer's own letter states that he has not forgotten his correspondent and that he is still delighted with the photographs that have been published, remarking that they have a particular charm. Some paperclip rust staining to the upper left corner of each page, slightly affecting Martin's text, but not Schweitzer's. G

SCHWEITZER, Albert (1875-1965). Typed letter signed ("Albert Schweitzer") to The Beacon Press, 24 October 1957. 2 pages, 4to, with 10-line autograph postscript. Matted and framed. "I AM NOT ALWAYS COMFORTABLE WITH THE COMPLICATED STATEMENTS GENERATED BY MODERN MACHINES" Schweitzer asks his publisher's help in settling his accounts after the recent death of his wife, as he prepares to return to West Africa. "For the settlement of my wife's estate after her death in June 1957, after many years of happy life together, I am making an inventory of our possessions." He wants to declare their income as of 30 June and he asks his publisher to send him his next royalty statement and payment as of June 30, even though he is owed additional royalties. Those he would like to receive either at the end of 1957 or early in 1958. He asks that statements be forwarded to him "after my departure from Gunsbach to Africa. "Would you please give me at the end of your accounting a statement making it clear exactly what is the amount I have received from you. I am not always comfortable with the complicated statements generated by modern machines. So please give me an explanation for the layman to understand." He gives directions for his bank account at the Banque de l'Afrique Occidentale, in Gabon, French Equatorial Africa, and asks them to forward payments owed him there (he provides his bank account number) or to the Bank's main offices in Paris. "If that is troublesome, then please send the check and royalty statement to Gunsbach."
