KEY, Francis Scott (1779-1843) American lawyer and amateur poet who wrote the words to the United States national anthem, "The Star-Spangled Banner" Autograph Letter Signed, "F.S. Key" 3pp. quarto, Annapolis, April 3, 1798 to John L. Kerr, a friend and fellow law student who was later a U.S. Senator, commenting on their mutual friends, especially girlfriends, and telling a funny story of a trick he and the girl who turned out to be his future wife played on another young lady. "…I desire you will burn this letter the moment you have read it & never tell any person what I am now going to tell you. I ought not to tell it but it is so good a thing I can't help it. I was some time ago at Miss Lloyds, Maria & myself were standing at the door around 9 o'clock at night, Mrs. Murray's carriage came to the door. We agreed to go to Mr. Cooke's in it. Accordingly that she would call Betsy in & begin to talk to her. When we got there Maria asked for Miss Betsy, who came into the carriage & sat down, little thinking who was there. 'Betsy,' says Maria, 'have you heard that we are talked of all over town about our romping in the mud this morning.', 'No,' replies Betsy, 'who told you.' 'Why,' said Maria, 'Frank Key told me.' Betsy then began 'Well, damn Frank Key. Nobody else saw us but him, I dare say he told it, damn his little soul. I wish I had him here, I'd give it to him, God damn him I say. I'll pay him for it if I catch him. Is he at your house now?" 'Here he is,' says Maria. I then discovered myself which I was very near doing sooner for I could scarcely contain my laughter. She looked a little foolish for the first two or three times I saw her afterwards, but she appears to have got quite over it now. This is the way these pretty innocent creatures talk when by themselves…" Fine and amusing. Had anyone indeed in those days heard what Betsy said, she would have been in real trouble, as swearing was not countenanced, especially by young ladies. It is interesting to not that Key, quite the practical joker in his youth, married Maria Lloyd a few years later, and she bore him 11 children one of whom, Philip, was killed in a duel over a lady by her jealous husband, future Union general Daniel Sickles.

INVITING INA CLAIRE TO DINNER, WITH THE POSSIBILITY OF MORE. Autograph Letter Signed ("F. Scott Fitzgerald"), 1 p, 8vo, Wilmington, DE, n.d., to actress Ina Claire, on Du Pont Biltmore letterhead, some offset from ink, stain to upper right corner, mild toning. Scholars have long known that Fitzgerald was fascinated with actress Ina Claire from the moment as a teenager he first saw her on the stage. What has not been revealed before now is that Claire attended one of the Fitzgeralds' notorious parties at the Ellerslie estate in Delaware, where the Fitzgeralds resided from 1927 to 1929. From the lobby of the Biltmore Hotel in Wilmington, Fitzgerald sends this note to the actress: "Fabulously beautiful Creature / Faultlessly groomed I shall be on hand a little after five and in one of my fleet of swift Rolls-Royces whisk you in 3 ½ minutes to our palace of delights upon the limpid Delaware. A thousand Cercassian girls and eunuchs will perform a march while we dine (at 6) upon bats wings and Chateau Yquem 1909." See illustration.

FITZGERALD EXPLAINS HIS DAUGHTER'S "DISORDERED SITUATION." Autograph Letter Signed ("F. Scott Fitzgerald"), 3 pp recto and verso, 8vo (conjoining leaves), Asheville, NC, n.d. [but c.1935], to Miss White on Grove Park Inn stationery, light creasing and toning, otherwise fine. In 1935-1936 Fitzgerald stayed at Asheville, NC's Grove Park Inn while his wife Zelda sought treatment at a local sanatorium. In this letter, he writes Miss White, his 15 year-old daughter's chaperon, giving instructions for his daughter's schedule, but also offering an explanation for her recent behavior. In part: "I know how kind you have been to Scotty and I am grateful for your patience in helping out the disordered situation in which she is in, perforce. Some of the hardness in her which you may find unsympathetic comes from this never knowing where her home is, being, in effect, what we call a 'hotel child.' Except for her white persian in the country I don't think she has been able to fix her affections solidly on anything for four years. All the rest has been flux and make-the-best-of-it. The best of it has been the childish dazzle of being popular! I've made the usual masculine mistake of either bullying her or spoiling her." See illustration.

      Francis Scott Fitzgerald (1896-1940) Autograph

      Est: €2,800 - €5,600

Francis Scott Fitzgerald (1896-1940) Autograph letter written by the great American writer in the year preceding his death (the second year of war in Europe), while he was working at his last, unfinished novel: The Last Tycoon, edited by Edmund Wilson and published in 1941. One-page typed letter, 4to, dated 26 June 1940 and signed 'Scott Fitzg' in pencil. Also enclosed is the original envelope, addressed to Fitzgerald's secretary: 'Isabel Owens 1403 N. Laurel Ave. Hollywood': 'I'm terribly sorry that my letter about Zelda's Scondalabro crossed you, because she does want it. It is a pure concession to an invalid because it will never to be produced again but if you are downtown and within range of the piece I wish you would get it [...] The days at La POIX in 1933 seem comparatively tranquil now. You remember how we used to take time out in the middle of the summer mornings to go swimming in the quarry. The people out here don 't realize yet that there's a war on' . Extraordinary document shedding light on the life of a great contemporary writer and recounting a page of history through his words.
