Henry Scott Sold at Auction Prices

b. 1911 - d. 2005

British and American clippers with billowing sails are the main subjects of artist Henry Scott's paintings. His eagerness to capture the beauty of these vessels on the high seas afforded Scott honorary membership of the International Association of Master Mariners. Painter Henry Scott was born in 1911 into a family of mariners dating back to the 18th century, and by age 11, he had combined his love of the sea with art and was sketching seascapes.

Artist Henry Scott's maritime paintings for sale included the commissioned 1970 oil, Morning Cloud, which was owned and skippered at the time by The Right Honorable Edward Heath, M.P. Another of Scott's paintings, Steel Ship Cambrian King, sold for more than 160 percent above its estimated value in 2017. Find your sea legs by purchasing classic maritime paintings from Invaluable.

§ Henry Scott, FRSA (1911-2005) The Cutty Sark - Homeward Bound signed 'Henry Scott' (lower right) oil on canvas 49.5 x 75cm Built in 1869, by which date the sailing ship’s monopoly of the China tea trade was almost at an end, Cutty Sark not only made her name as one of the fastest commercial sailing vessels of all time, but has also achieved further immortality now that she is the sole extant example of her type of vessel. Ordered by J. Willis & Son of London from the unknown Dumbarton yard of Scott & Linton, which went bankrupt before Cutty Sark was completed, she was actually finished off by Denny Bros. who had her ready for launching on 23rd November 1869. Registered at 963 tons gross (921 net), she measured 212½ feet in length with a 36 foot beam and was constructed from only the finest materials. At her best in strong beam and quartering winds when none of the other clippers could catch her, she frequently made 15 or 16 knots and even managed 17½ on one celebrated occasion. Although she broke no records for her passage times, she nevertheless performed consistently well on the China run until, ousted by steam, she was put into the Australian wool trade in 1883. It was on this route that she really made her reputation for speed and turned in many remarkable runs prior to 1895 when she was sold to Portuguese owners who re-rigged her as a barquentine. Surviving the Great War, she was brought home for restoration in 1922 and eventually floated into her permanent dry-dock at Greenwich in 1954. We are grateful to Michael Naxton for his help in preparing this catalogue note. The painting is executed in oil on a linen canvas support which is unlined. The canvas tension is good and the picture is in plane. A small puncture in the upper right quadrant has been repaired from the reverse and filled and retouched at the front. The paint layer is in a very good, stable condition overall. The varnish is even, glossy and slightly yellowed but acceptable. Framed 64 x 89.5cm
