  • Johnny Secatero Mixed Media - "Mud Heads" ca. 1960
    Mar. 27, 2025

Johnny Secatero Mixed Media - "Mud Heads" ca. 1960

    Est: $500 - $750

Johnny Secatero (Native American, Dine / Navajo, 1945-2010). "Mud Heads" painting on paper or board, n.d. Signed at lower right. A playful painting of two Mud Head Kachina dancers by Navajo artist Johnny Secatero. Rendered on a plain yet slightly textured background, the composition depicts an adult Mud Head Kachina dancer carrying a child Mud Head on his back, who raises a rattle instrument in one hand, the other pointing down. In Diné (Navajo) culture, the Mud Head Kachina, or Koyemsi, is not traditionally a part of their own spiritual or ceremonial practices but is recognized due to interactions with neighboring Puebloan tribes, particularly the Hopi. The Navajo have long engaged in cultural exchanges with the Hopi, and over time, some Kachina figures, including the Mud Head, have influenced Navajo art and ceremonial representations. Size of painting: 10" W x 13.25" H (25.4 cm x 33.7 cm); of frame: 12.25" W x 15.25" H (31.1 cm x 38.7 cm) While the Hopi regard Koyemsi as a clown and a figure of both humor and discipline, the Navajo primarily see it as an adopted symbol rather than a spiritual being within their own traditions. In Navajo craftsmanship, Koyemsi is sometimes depicted in sand paintings or as carvings made for trade and artistic expression. However, its role remains distinct from the deeply rooted Diné ceremonial system, which revolves around hózho´ (harmony) and healing rather than Kachina worship. Johnny Secatero was a renowned Navajo artist whose career spanned several decades. Born in 1945, he pursued higher education at Diné College before earning a master’s degree in elementary education. He dedicated much of his career to teaching Navajo language and culture at Lukachukai Community School and also served as Lukachukai Chapter Vice President for two terms. Beyond his contributions to education and leadership, Secatero was a highly skilled painter, particularly known for his mastery of watercolor. His artwork often depicted Zuni spiritual figures and dancers, characterized by meticulous detail, realistic portrayals, and simple yet striking backgrounds. Recognized as one of the most prominent Diné painters, his work was featured in Southwest Indian Painting by Clara Lee Tanner. His traditional paintings are housed in esteemed collections, including the Eiteljorg Museum in Indianapolis, the Museum of Northern Arizona in Flagstaff, and the Wheelwright Museum of the American Indian in Santa Fe. Over the course of more than 30 years, Secatero received numerous awards for his paintings, which were exhibited in major museums showcasing American Indian art.
