It depicts an oriental temple scenery with a ceremonial procession that captivates through the detailed and vivid composition of the figural staffage. The inspection of the sky reveals an interesting observation, as it shows traces of the grid square pattern used for the preliminary sketch. Anton Seder was not only active as a professor and director of the School of Arts and Crafts in Strasbourg, but also as a decorative painter. In this respect it seems to be conceivable that the present work may have served as a first draft for a decorative wall painting. The painting is in good condition considering its age. It is signed and dated lower right ‘Ant. Seder 1875’. The canvas is relined and shows light marks, where the frame has rubbed. Inspection from the side reveals scattered areas of matte retouching. The gilt stucco frame is in good condition with small traces of age and use. The framed work measures 100 x 178 cm and the size of the stretcher is 76 x 153 cm. Anton Seder (1850-1916) Anton Johann Nepomuk Seder was born in Munich and received his artistic training at the Academy of Arts. He was a follower of the Jugendstil movement and not only active as a painter, but also as a sculptor, a decorative painter and an architect. In 1890, Seder was finally appointed director of the School of Arts and Crafts in Strasbourg. He was a specialist in craft drawings and published a number of beautiful designs for gold, silver and iron works.
