PIANO AND DRUM BY PETER SEKAER, VINTAGE 1940'S

      Est: $3,000 - $3,500

PIANO AND DRUM BY PETER SEKAER. 11 x 14- inch toned gelatin silver print on heavy paper, vintage 1940's, with his 215 East 56th Street stamp on verso. Sekaer, born in Denmark, studied at the Art Student's League and The New School, with Berenice Abbott, Hans Hofmann and others. He assisted Walker Evans and accompanied Evans on his trips to the South. He then worked for various federal agencies, but moved to NY in the early 1940's. Vintage prints are rare. NOTE: AN EXHIBITION OF SEKAER'S PHOTOGRAPHS IS CURRENTLY AT THE INTERNATIONAL CENTER OF PHOTOGRAPHY IN NYC.Here is something from their website: "The Danish documentary photographer Peter Sekaer (1901-1950) was one of the key contributors to U.S. government photographic projects during the Great Depression. Sekaer photographed alongside Walker Evans in the American South during the Farm Security Administration years, and photographs by the two are sometimes indistinguishable. But Sekaer, who was a painter and who made a living as a sign painter, was an accomplished and prolific photographer who combined a strong sense of advocacy with a highly attuned graphic eye." Above the piano are family photos including the father in WWII uniform. There are soft wrinkles in the lower left, and a few other signs of use. There is some "silvering" in the dark areas that show up as reflections in the scan. [3]

Fa‡ade, New Orleans Gelatin silver print. Circa 1936. Credit in ink on the verso. 73/4 x 9 3/8in. (19.7 x 23.7cm.) NOTES Danish emigr‚ Peter Sekaer came to the United States in 1918, studied photography with Berenice Abbott at the New School for Social Research in 1934 and joined Walker Evans on his epic Resettlement Administration assignment in the American South in 1936. Fa‡ade, New Orleans, was taken during this trip. Although influenced by the documentary style of both Evans and Abbott, Sekaer's work differs in his preoccupation with the human constituent of his compositions. Sekaer went on to work for a number of government agencies, then pursued a commercial career until his premature death, aged 49, in 1950. Subsequently almost forgotten, interest in his work was revived by retrospective exhibitions in Denmark and the United States in the 1990s.
