Japanese Mixed Medium Suzuri-bako by Kamisaka Sekka and others

          Est: $800 - $1,200

Japanese Lacquer: Suzuri-bako (Writing Box) Cranes and Rock, is a work designed by Kamisaka Sekka (Japanese 1866-1942) with lacquer by Miki Hyoetsu (Japanese 1877-1949) and Kyoto Ware by Ito Tozan (Japanese 1846-1920) This box bears the signatures of all three artists and is comprised of lacquer, gold leaf, Kyoto ware ceramics and tin applied over the wood body. Kamisaka Sekka was a painter, designer and lacquer artist living in the late 19th and early 20th century. Closely allied with the Rimpa school of artists, this box reflects the decorative aesthetic of lacquer work by other Rimpa artists in the use of materials-lead and porcelain used to create the image of cranes and rock. The large squares of gold leaf further recalls the rich papers used by artists for painting and calligraphy. The writing box comes with a tomobako with inscribed lid. Provenance: Bachmann Eckenstein Art and Antiques, Basel, Switzerland. Dimensions: L. 9 3/4" W. 3 3/4" Condition: Excellent Condition.

This tea bowl is a collaborative work between the ceramist Kiyomizu Rokubei V and the painter Kamisaka Sekka who decorated the exterior with vibrant autumn grasses. Sekka was one of the protagonists of Japanese art in the traumatic historical transition between the end of feudalism and the beginning of the modernization of the country. A convinced admirer of traditional aesthetics, he preferred not to be influenced by novelties from the West, as happened at the same time to many other artists, producing works that exude ancient techniques and styles, in particular the ways of the Rinpa School that flourished between the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.
