      HERBERT SELIGMANN, JOHN MARIN DRAWS, ALFRED STIEGLITZ LOOKS ON, 1932. 4 x 3 ¼- inch vintage gelatin silver print. The modernist painter Marin was a close friend of Stieglitz, who frequently exhibited Marin's paintings. Seligmann, a writer and journalist, was also a close friend of Stieglitz and did secretarial work for him. A copy of this photograph is in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum. Provenance: Sotheby's 1979.

      Herbert Seligmann (1891-1984) - American writer and civil rights activist Portrait of Alfred Stieglitz Signed, titled and inscribed in ink on the mount 'Alfred Stieglitz portrait by Herbert J. Seligmann This print belongs to Herbert J. Seligmann' Matted Dimensions: 4 x 3 in. (10.2 x 7.6 cm.) Overall dimensions: 20 x 16 in. (50.8 x 40.6 cm.) Good Condition Herbert Seligmann was one of the many close acquaintances of renowned American photographer, Alfred Stieglitz, who conducted business and worked as a typist on the latter's behalf. Seligmann went on to also document Stieglitz' first airplane ride. This candid and psychological portrait depicts an older Stieglitz in double exposure framed by an abstract line of light along the right. Other photographs of Stieglitz can be found in the collection at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. With ink inscription by artist on cardboard mount. Photo dry mounted to cardboard. Herbert Seligmann (American, 1891-1984) Writer and civil rights activist Herbert Jacob Seligmann published books and articles on civil rights, World War II, artists, and related topics, often contributing to newspaper and magazines. His works include studies of the civil rights of African-Americans and the rise of Nazism during World War II, reviews of fine art books, and articles about artists such as Vincent A. Hartgen, John Marin and Georgia O'Keeffe. He often documented his trips throughout the United States and Europe, providing photographs, slides and negative rolls to accompany his articles.
