CONTACT US SKU#: 119143 US Shipping $75 + insurance. BIOGRAPHY: Born in Hamburg Altona, the painter Christian Sell studied at the Dusseldorf Academy under Hildebrandt and W. Von Schadow from 1851 to 1856. He undertook numerous study trips through Germany and Belgium. In his early works, he created historical war scenes from the 17th century. However, due to his participation in the wars of 1864, 1866 and 1870, he went over to the description of contemporary events, many subjects were of military genre of the time.He generally painted in oil on wood panel. Though he completed larger works, most were miniatures, less than 9" X 12". Works by Christian Sell are displayed in important collections, for example at the Military History Museum in Vienna, and the Berlin National Gallery.

BEWACHUNG FRANZÖSISCHER ZUAVEN WÄHREND DES KRIEGES 1870/71 Öl auf Leinwand. 60 x 90 cm. Rechts unten signiert und datiert „Chr. Sell 1871 / Düsseldorf“. Das Bildformat ist bewusst breit angelegt, um der Weite der Landschaft, der französischen Stadt im Hintergrund und der Figurengruppe vorne eine realistische Bühne zu verschaffen. So hat der Maler den Bildinhalt in drei Zonen gegliedert: am Horizont die im Tal tiefer liegende Stadt mit Kirchturm, auf der Anhöhe im Mittelgrund die in Silhouette verschattet stehende Reitergruppe deutscher Ulanen sowie im Vordergrund die in höchster Realistik gezeigten beiden Soldaten mit Pickelhauben und Gewehren, die vier französische Gefangene bewachen. Hierbei handelt es sich um die in die Armee Frankreichs eingezogenen, „Zuaven“ genannten Kämpfer, die ob ihres Kampfgeistes gefürchtet waren. Ihrer Herkunft aus Nordafrika und anderen osmanischen Ländern wegen tragen sie die entsprechenden farbigen Uniformen, immer aber mit roter Kopfbedeckung, gemäß der Armeen Frankreichs. Um die deutsche Überlegenheit im Bild anzudeuten, finden sich am Boden noch zwei rote französische Uniformmützen. Sell, der sich in seinem Werk überwiegend mit den Ereignissen dieses Krieges auseinandergesetzt hat, wollte hier wohl dem deutschen Sieg ein Denkmal setzen. So ist das Gemälde auch erst im Schlussjahr 1871 entstanden. Beachtenswert ist hier auch die höchst qualitätvolle Wiedergabe der Physiognomien, wobei z.T. wohl auch an Porträtierung gedacht werden kann bzw. an sehr genaue Zeichenstudien vor Ort. A. R.
