Gelatin silver print cm 28,3 x 37,7 | 11.2 x 14.8 in. Photographer's credit blindstamp on the image Of the great Biellese photographer, Vittorio Sella, one can equally appreciate, on one hand, his ability to tackle a subject as novel in the late 19th century as mountain photography and, on the other, the meticulous precision with which he made his prints. In order to realise those works that would later be defined with a neologism 'photo-mountaineering', one had to be an appreciable climber, also considering the fact that one had to move around with heavy equipment, as unwieldy as the optical benches of the past were and as fragile as the glass plates that served as negatives. But it is not only that sense of grandeur that transpires from his images that makes his photographs valuable, but also the technique he himself invented, thanks to which he made particularly refined and valuable prints, as can be seen in the photographs shown here.

Inscribed in ink on mount recto: Caucasus Ushba from the west II 77; Inscribed in pencil: 6; Print recto embossed with artist's credit stamp in bottom right corner; Inscribed in ink on mount verso: opp p 139 Vol II Caucasus / "Ushba from the West"; Inscribed in pencil: Loan 117 / C-11 / 776 5. Ushba (4,710 m (15,450 ft)) is one of the most notable peaks of the Caucasus Mountains. It is in the Svaneti region of Georgia, just South of the border with the Kabardino-Balkaria region of Russia. Although it does not rank in the 10 highest peaks of the range, Ushba is known as the "Matterhorn of the Caucasus" for its picturesque, spire-shaped double summit. Due to its steep profile and unstable weather, Ushba is considered by many climbers as the most difficult ascent in the Caucasus. Explorer and photographer Frederick H Chapin summarized Sella's 1889 trip to the Caucasus Amc notes Vol. V. No. 4, the results of Signor Sella's photographic works in the Caucasus were placed before mountaineering and geographical societies. Signor Sella was accompanied (in the summer of 1889) by his brother Erminio Sella, Maquignaz the famous Val Tournanche guide, and three Italian porters. Unfortunately, Maquignaz, the skillful climber of the Matterhorn and the Dent du Geant, was taken sick and was obliged to return home; yet the explorers accomplished much photographic work in valleys and among glaciers. The list embraces one hundred and twelve titles. From such a varied collection it is difficult to select pictures for special commendation. One of the beautiful views of Ushba serves as our frontispiece, and the artist has brought home views of the other great giants of the central Caucasus. This sale of lots from this auction will directly benefit the Appalachian Mountain Club Trails Protection Fund; Conservation Research and Climate Action; and the Modernization and Preservation of the AMC Library and Archives.

Inscribed in ink on mount recto: Caucasus Ushba II 769; Print recto embossed with artist's credit stamp in bottom right corner; Inscribed in ink on mount verso: Caucasus Mts. / Illegible / Ushba. From August through October 1890 he went with his brother Erminio, photography assistant Emilio Botta, guide Fabian Croux, and porters Secondino Bianchetti and Giuseppe Gamba for a second trip to the Caucasus. On August 7 Sella photographed a funerary feast day, which is the subject of many photographs in this group. There were four first ascents; traveling to Zinaga, Adai Khokh district (including mapping), and Suanetian Glaciers, they returned through Suanetia, photographing Ushba and the countryside and making ethnographic views. "At daybreak grey mists were driving about the higher peaks. Still the weather did not look by any means hopeless. The chief fatigue in the ascent was a tiresome gully - tiresome only because it was filled with loose, small fragments of slate, which sank under the feet like shingle on a sea - beach. Above this a rocky buttress, where Signor Sella found many crystals of great size, gave easy access to the snow. On our right the neve ended in broken cliffs, fragments of which formed a small glacier remained at the bottom of a dark precipice far below us. On our left the mountain sloped in an enormous mass of absolutely smooth slate, pitched at a very high angle. At this point the clouds covered us, and all distant view was lost. Twenty minutes' tramp up snow-banks brought us to the long level ridge that forms the summit. Freshfield" p. 124. SPECTACULAR Gvalda Glacial Valley 1890

By the early 1890s the idea that photographs could be artistic was commonplace, though most artists, including the young Alfred Stieglitz, held that they should be "painterly", soft-focused pictures representing nostalgic, sentimental and romantic qualities. Running parallel to this "pictorial" sensibility were the sharp focused views made by exploration photographers like Sella who was striving to capture geological and geographical verisimilitude through powerfully composed crisp pictures. By 1910 photographers like Stieglitz and Paul Strand began to shift away from pictorial imagery in favor of more documentary, unsentimental, hard edged pictures with a "modernist" sensibility, very like the pictures that Sella had been producing all along. Artistically, Sella was ahead of his time since he had an eye for the abstract masses of mountains, as well as the details of escarpments and glaciers. The rhythm and form of glaciers spreading from and up mountain peaks, forming rivers and bowls around and up to the highest peaks were a compelling composition for Vittorio Sella.

Vittorio Sella lived during the Golden Age of European mountain exploration when many peaks were being scaled for the first time. Prior to his era, mountains were mostly regarded as dangerous obstacles to be crossed, haunted by evil spirits. The early nineteenth century saw a dramatic shift in people's perception of mountains, heralded by the Romantic poets who lauded them as "palaces of nature" that embodied the eternal. To Wordsworth and others of the Romantic era, alpine pinnacles became symbols of the heights to which the imagination of man could aspire, toward the unattainable goals of understanding infinity, eternity, and the vastness of God. It was no accident that the beginnings of mountaineering as a sport coincided with the recognition that mountains were, in fact, beautiful. And the development of photography coincided with that very moment in the history of natural philosophy which has been called the "era of moralized mountaineering". This ushered in a sudden interest in landscape and natural scenery, along with poetry, painting, photography, and the art of travel as people sought out the heightened emotions brought about by a full experience of nature. Sella worked in all four seasons and under the most difficult circumstances, documenting the highest regions of the earth with extraordinary artistry. Ansel Adams paid tribute to Sella's greatness in a 1946 article for the Sierra Club Bulletin when he wrote, "with Sella's sensitive insight and response the magnificence of mountains is distilled into a high order of expression". Tetnuldi 4,858 m (15,938 ft) is a prominent peak in the central part of the Greater Caucasus Mountain Range, located in the Svaneti region of Georgia. According to most sources, Tetnuldi is the 10th highest peak of the Caucasus. The slopes of the mountain are glaciated generally above the 3,000 metre (9,840 ft) line. The most prominent glacier of the mountain is called Adishi. It was first climbed by Douglas Freshfield in 1896.

"I have left to the last the journeys of Signor Vittorio Sella, my fellow -labourer in the preparation of this work. In 1889 he made, with his younger brother Erminio, a long journey in the mountains: and in 1890 he returned to them, taking with him three Italian farm servants to carry his photographic apparatus. He climbed, besides Elbruz and the Laila, three high summits, Burdjula, Zikhvarga, and Ulluauz Bashi. But his distinguishing success was in the work that gives their chief value to these volumes. He has illustrated the Caucasian snows as no distant glacier chain has ever been illustrated before. With the help of his sturdy Piedmontese followers, he carried his camera and his glass-plates to elevations of over sixteen thousand feet, and brought back with him images, not only of the valleys and their people, but of the summits and their vast mountain panoramas. He anticipated the Russian surveyors in correcting the representation of the Suanetian glaciers on the five-verst map." Freshfield p. 21. Shkhara (5,193 m (17,000 ft)) is the highest point in the nation of Georgia. Located in the Svaneti region along the Georgia-Russia border, Shkhara lies 88 kilometers (55 mi) North of the city of Kutaisi, Georgia's second-largest city. The summit lies in the central part of the Greater Caucasus Mountain Range, to the south-east of Mount Elbrus, Europe's highest mountain. Shkhara is the third-highest peak in the Caucasus, just behind Dykh-Tau. Tetnuldi 4,858 m (15,938 ft) is a prominent peak in the central part of the Greater Caucasus Mountain Range, located in the Svaneti region of Georgia. According to most sources, Tetnuldi is the 10th highest peak of the Caucasus. The slopes of the mountain are glaciated generally above the 3,000 meter (9,840 ft) line. The most prominent glacier of the mountain is called Adishi. It was first climbed by Douglas Freshfield in 1896 The rhythm and form of glaciers spreading from and up mountain peaks, forming rivers and bowls around and up to the highest peaks were a compelling composition for Vittorio Sella. This sale of lots from this auction will directly benefit the Appalachian Mountain Club Trails Protection Fund; Conservation Research and Climate Action; and the Modernization and Preservation of the AMC Library and Archives. Explorer and photographer Frederick H Chapin summarized Sella's 1889 trip to the Caucasus AMC notes Vol. V. No. 4, the results of Signor Sella's photographic work in the Caucasus has been placed before mountaineering and geographical societies. Frederick Chapin wrote for the AMC Bulletin about Sella's 1889 trip to the Caucasus: From the Eastern peak of Elbruz, four panoramic views were secured. These are very successful in every way, but especially so in representing grand cloud effects. In one of these (No. 601), which shows sombre rocks in the foreground, the clouds far below the observer seem to be tossing like the billows of the ocean and disappear over the distant plain; in another of the same series (No. 602), they look like a great inland sea.
