VINCENT SELLAER 1490 - 1544 - ALLEGORY OF PERFECT LOVE

        Est: -

Vincent Sellaer excelled among Flemish painters in his ability to combine Flemish and Italian influences into monumental allegorical works. It is believed that his refined manuscript was influenced by two main Italian traditions - Lombard-Leonardian, represented by Moretto da Brescia and Girolamo Romani, and Florentine-Roman, namely represented by Andrea del Sarto and Rafael Santi's school. The work is marked: "PERFECTA CHARITAS / FORAS MITTIT / TIMOREM / IOH, ACA". The designation refers to the biblical text - IOH - John, First Epistle of John: "Love does not know fear, perfect love dispels fear, for fear causes torment, and he who fears has not perfected in love." Love - charitas, belongs to the seven Christian virtues, Vincent Sellaer portrayed her in the traditional form of a naked woman surrounded by children, similar to, for example, Lucas Cranach. The theme of charitas is one of the author's iconical. Restored. Technique: Oil on wood

SUSANNA UND DIE BEIDEN ALTEN Öl auf Holz. Parkettiert. 105 x 84 cm. (1221462) (10) Vincent Sellaer, active 1538 – 1544, attributed SUSANNA AND THE ELDERS Oil on panel. Parquetted. 105 x 84 cm. This is an unusual depiction of the Old Testament subject as a remarkably quiet scene. Instead of the usual physically pressing presence of the two Elders, this painting’s subject matter is rather Susanna’s reflection after the persuasion of the Elder on the right. The colour scheme emphasizes the contrasts of the triad of red, yellow and white.

Vincent Sellaer, Leda and the Swan

        Est: €70,000 - €90,000

VINCENT SELLAER (attributed) (active in Mechelen in 1538) Leda and the Swan Oil on panel, 30,2 x 42,6 inches (76,8 x 108,2 cm), ancient carved and gilt frame In this wonderful panel, Leda is represented in a moment of domestic rest, while speaking lied down on soft pillows with the swan caressing her hair and almost using its wing as a cushion for her. Castor and Pollux, born from Leda's union with Jupiter in form of a swan, are resting on their mother's lying body: from the same intercourse, getting out of an egg like the Dioscuri, also Helen of Troy and Clytemnestra were born. In respect of its childlike figures, it is also comparable to Sellaer's Jupiter, Satyr, Antiope and their Children in the Musées royaux des Beaux-Arts de Belgique, Bruxelles. The iconography comes from Leonardo's famous lost composition which influenced and inspired many Dutch artists of the time, including Joos and Cornelis van Cleve, both of them painting numerous versions of the same subject. The influence of Leonardo's is clearly recognizable in the faces and the hair of the children. Vincent Sellaer (now convincingly identified as Vincent Geldersman) was, with Michiel Coxcie, the leading artist in Malines (now Mechelen), a city that had become the cultural centre of the Netherlands during the reign of Margaret of Austria. He painted several different versions of Leda and the Swan, as well as a Susannah and the Elders, a Cleopatra and a Descent from the Cross for the cathedral of his own city. Sellaer would have absorbed this stylistic innovation during his sojourn in Italian (1522-24), during which he probably worked with Moretto of Brescia (Alessandro Bonvicino). Sellaer's style is characterized by an ability to combine seamlessly Northern European and Italian sources and create paintings notable for their power and monumental quality.

(8711925) Vincent Sellaer, a Painter from the South of the Netherlands, active between 1538 and 1544 in Mechelen, attributed to Oil on oak. Parquetted. 109.5 x 77.5 cm.
