        Australia / Surf Club. 1936.

        Est: $7,000 - $9,000

ARTIST: GERT SELLHEIM (1901-1970) SIZE: 25 1/8 x 40 1/4 in./64 x 102.2 cm PRINTER: Sands & McDougall, Melbourne DESCRIPTION: “Sellheim’s rarest and most famous poster is Surf Club. It depicts a team of five female lifeguards performing a reel-and-line rescue exercise, a subtle way to assure seaside visitors that they will be safe while they enjoy all the thrills the sea has to offer. The blue surf, accentuated by stylized waves, the sandy yellow beach, and the bronzed lifeguards all combine with Sellheim’s expert use of diagonals and geometric patterns to result in a true art deco masterpiece” (Crouse/Deco, p. 279). Gert Sellheim was born in Estonia and studied architecture in Berlin, Munich, and Graz before migrating to Australia in 1926, where he spent two years working as a farm laborer before his architectural qualifications were recognized. Moving to Melbourne in 1930 must have supplied him with lithographic inspiration, as he began designing posters the following year. Sellheim designed the famous flying kangaroo symbol for Qantas airlines, as well as the 1948 two-shilling “Aboriginal Art” stamp. (Art Deco; Travel; Sports; Australia & New Zealand)

After a year of labouring work in rural WA he gained employment as a site architect at the University of Western Australia. In 1930 Sellheim moved to Melbourne where he set up his own architectural practice and began designing and exhibiting posters. His designs were unusual for the times. With bold use of photomontage, drawings and the juxtaposition of hand-lettering and commercial type text they were at the cutting edge of graphic design. In 1939 he was commissioned to decorate the Government tourist Bureau in Melbourne, producing a large scale mural using flat colour and photomontage. This work was awarded the 1939 Sulman Prize. From the 1940s Sellheim created posters for Qantas Empire Airways, including the distinctive flying kangaroo logo. He was also noted for his interest in Aboriginal art and he incorporated Aboriginal-derived motifs frequently in his work.   During WWII Sellheim was classified by Australian authorities as an "enemy alien" and was sent to an internment camp in Victoria in 1943. After intervention from his family he was released to do military work. Ironically he was sent to work on the conversion of metric to imperial measurements of armaments. Sellheim's beach inspired travel posters are important examples of how beach culture archetypes have been adopted by Australian Government departments and agencies to market Australia as a tourist and migrant destination.

To achieve a distinctly Australian look, inspiration for travel posters was drawn from the X-ray art style, from rock paintings and from Aboriginal material culture. Aboriginal motifs, such as the boomerang, were often tempered with non-Aboriginal motifs such as swimsuit-clad women or sheep.

Niven Pty Ltd, Melb.” Gert Sellheim was one of the earliest designers commissioned by the Australian National Travel Association (ANTA) to produce designs for Australian travel posters. Established in 1929, ANTA aspired to attract overseas visitors to Australia by displaying artist-designed posters in its London, San Francisco and Bombay offices (directed at the British serving in India)…‘Corroboree Australia’ illustrates the designer Gert Sellheim’s strikingly modernist incorporation, and early reference to the art and culture of Aboriginal Australia as a significant aspect of Australian culture and identity. His most renowned design is Qantas Airlines' distinctive flying kangaroo logo.

        Est: $8,000 - $10,000

ARTIST: GERT SELLHEIM (1901-1970) SIZE: 25 x 40 in./63.5 x 101.6 cm PRINTER: Sands & McDougall, Melbourne DESCRIPTION: Gert Sellheim was born in Estonia and studied architecture in Berlin, Munich and Graz before migrating to Australia in 1926, where he spent two years working as a farm laborer before his architectural qualifications were recognized. Moving to Melbourne in 1930 must have supplied him with lithographic inspiration, as he began designing posters the following year. Sellheim designed the famous flying kangaroo symbol for Qantas airlines, as well as the 1948 two-shilling “Aboriginal Art” stamp. (Sports; Art Deco)

        Australia / Corroboree.

        Est: $2,000 - $2,500

Artist: GERT SELLHEIM (1901-1970) Size: 24 3/4 x 39 3/4 in./62.8 x 101 cm F.W. Niven, Melbourne For 40,000 years, Australian aboriginals have danced the Corroboree, a ritual gathering of dance, song and rhythm that invokes the Dreamtime, the sacred reality of the world. Adorning themselves with headdresses, white stripes of body paint, and banging out rhythms on boomerangs or rhythm sticks, it's a deep immersion into the archaic history of the world's oldest people. Gert Sellheim, a German immigrant to Australia after the First World War, found this a natural subject for the Australian Tourist Bureau, influenced as he was by Cubism in his youth. In opposition to his main rival in Australian travel posters, Percy Trompf, Sellheim eschewed descriptive portraits of Australia's landscape and instead tried to represent the character and sensation of the land, as this, one of his most famous posters, attests. Gert Sellheim (1901-1970) came to Australia from Germany in the 1920s as a trained architect. When Sellheim couldn't find work, he took up poster art. The artist's most famous work is his 1947 design of Qantas airlines' flying kangaroo logo. His posters are now among the most collectable in the travel poster field. Sellheim's sunny color palette and simple design are quite befitting of Australia's essence. The poster has managed to age gracefully, showing only small edge tears and light creases. Rolled, Very Fine.
