FROM THE COLLECTION OF THE FAMILY OF JAMES H. NAIL EVALINE CLARKE SELLORS (American, 1903-1995) Colt, circa 1950 Terracotta on wooden base 13-1/2 x 18-1/2 x 8-1/2 inches (34.3 x 47.0 x 21.6 cm) PROVENANCE: Evaline Clarke Sellors; Jewel Nail Bomar; By descent to Bill Bomar; Gift from Bill Bomar, Fort Worth, to James H. Nail. Albany, Texas. EXHIBITED: The Old Jail Art Center, Albany, Texas, on loan since 1989. Fort Worth native Evaline Clarke Sellors was born in 1903. She attended the prestigious Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and twice won the William Emlen Cresson award, which allowed her to continue studying art while traveling in Europe. After returning to Fort Worth in 1932, Sellors formed The Texas School of Arts with Sallie Gillespie and Blanche McVeigh. Throughout her career, she helped support herself with graphic design work. Sellors went on to teach art at several institutions in Fort Worth. She was a talented sculptor, an unusual medium for a woman in the beginning of the twentieth century. Colt is an excellent example of her work. It belongs to a prominent Fort Worth family and has been on loan to the permanent collection at The Old Jail Art Center for some time.
