Rafael Senet y Pérez (Seville, 1856-ibidem, 1926), was a Spanish painter and watercolourist known for his landscapes of Venice and other costumbrista and oriental themes. He studied at the School of Fine Arts in Seville with Teodoro Aramburu, Joaquín Domínguez Bécquer and Eduardo Cano. After a brief season in Madrid, in 1880, and with the help of the banker Ramón de Ibarra, he traveled to Rome where he fell under the influence of José Villegas Cordero. In Italy he traveled painting in the south of the peninsula and in Veneto. For The Return of Fishing in Naples he was awarded a second medal at the National Fine Arts in 1884. That same year he achieved the same award at the Munich International. He was also present at the Exhibition of the Center for Watercolourists in Barcelona and at the Fifth International Exhibition of Fine Arts in 1907. Senet Pérez was linked to the group of landscape artists from Alcalá de Guadaira, led by Emilio Sánchez Perrier. A painter from Venice, many of his works are in private English collections, the vast majority of them sold by the London dealer Arthur Tooth. Unten rechts signiert, bezeichnet und datiert "Rafael Senet / Venezia [18]95". -- -- Unterrichtet wird Rafael Senet in seiner Heimatstadt Sevilla an der Real Academia de Bellas Artes de Santa Isabel de Hungría von Joaquín Domínguez Bécquer und Eduardo Cano. Ab 1875 führt er ein eigenes Atelier. 1881 übersiedelt er nach Rom und reist noch im selben Jahr nach Venedig. Die Lagunenstadt bietet ihm Motive für zahlreiche Gemälde und Aquarelle. Er schließt einen Vertrag mit dem Londoner Kunsthändler Arthur Tooth, seine Gemälde erscheinen daraufhin auf Ausstellungen in London, Paris, Wien, Berlin, Budapest und Buenos Aires. 1890 kehrt er als 'Spezialist' für venezianische Motive nach Sevilla zurück. -- -- - Wir bitten darum, Zustandsberichte zu den Losen zu erfragen, da der Erhaltungszustand nur in Ausnahmefällen im Katalog angegeben ist. -- - Please ask for condition reports for individual lots, as the condition is usually not mentioned in the catalogue.

RAFAEL SENET Y PÉREZ (Seville, 1856-ibidem, 1926), "San Marcos. Watercolour on paper. Signed in the lower right corner. Measurements: 39.5 x 21.5 cm (frame). It is a painting in the tradition of Venetian Vedutism, whose history began in the 18th century and which was promoted by the Grand Tour. This tradition continued throughout the 19th century and well into the 20th century, as the city had become fashionable thanks to theoreticians such as John Ruskin and painters such as Fortuny who, through their visions of the city, projected a voluptuous and somewhat exotic image of the city, which became the perfect setting for culture. Senet was a Spanish painter and watercolourist who painted genre, oriental and landscape themes. Senet was linked to the Seville group of landscape painters of Alcalá de Guadaira, led by Emilio Sánchez Perrier. He began his training in the studio of Teodoro Aramburu at the Seville School of Fine Arts, where he was a pupil of Joaquín Domínguez Bécquer and Eduardo Cano. He moved to Madrid in 1880, where he became acquainted with the paintings of the great masters of the Prado and a year later travelled to Rome to further his studies, thanks to a scholarship granted to him by the banker Ramón de Ibarra. He sent his works to national and foreign exhibitions and won second medals at the National Fine Arts Exhibition of 1884 and the Munich International Exhibition. He took part in the Exhibition of the Centre of Watercolourists in Barcelona and in the Fifth International Exhibition of Fine Arts in 1907. Much of his output is in private collections in England, as the London gallery owner Arthur Tooth sold a large number of his paintings. He immortalised corners of picturesque villages such as the present one, a view from the stream that crosses a hamlet, with its Romanesque architecture ennobled by the use of a precise brushstroke and a palette rich in tonal nuances.
