The remarkable treatment of light and shadows is shown here in this peaceful village scene. Self-taught Ong Kim Seng has travelled all over the world to paint quaint scenes of romance. Such is his skills that he is the first Asian outside of the United States to be made a member of the American Watercolour Society, and after winning a total of six different awards made a Dolphin Fellow in 2000 (he is a member since 1992). This landscape work is immediately eye-catching and meticulously executed in typical Ong Kim Seng style. Earthy, beige colours sweep across the canvas to further embellish the majestic mountainscape that reveal its summit above the clouds while smaller mountains encapsulate the village by the lake below. Not only does it evoke a sense of tranquillity, it’s also otherworldly and endearing.

He trekked up to Everest Base Camp to paint its scenery in 1978 to test himself. “I wanted to see if I could work in conditions that were a lot harsher than those in Singapore, and I am very glad that I passed the test,” said Ong. The artist’s well-received Himalayan Trek Exhibition in 1979 was a testimonial of this fact. But more than that, Ong was captivated by the mountain range as well as the people of Kathmandu, which proceeded to inspire another trip in 1981. Throughout the years, on the other side of the Himalayan mountain range, lies Tibet, which posed a mysterious lure for the artist. “It represented my greatest challenge yet.

ONG KIM SENG : Nepal in Autumn - Bhaktapur Square, 2014

            Est: RM15,000 - RM35,000

‘Nepal in Autumn – Bhaktapur Square’ is a stunning en plein air depiction of the landscape at Bhaktapur Square – a city in the east of Kathmandu. An earthy tone washes over the artwork – illustrating the brick-laden, derelict buildings found in this township. Beyond the square, terraced buildings seem to greet the cloudy sky and a glimpse of Mount Everest forms a picturesque backdrop. Aptly titled, on the foreground, heaps of hay come into view, strewn about under the sun in preparation for winter, to feed the yaks and mules. The artist was amazed by this uncommon sight and proceeded to immortalise it through this painting.

This landscape work is immediately eye-catching and meticulously executed in typical Ong Kim Seng style. Earthy, beige colours sweep across the canvas to further embellish the majestic mountainscape that reveal its summit above the clouds while smaller mountains encapsulate the village by the lake below. Not only does it evoke a sense of tranquility, it’s also otherworldly and endearing.

            Est: RM22,000 - RM36,000

Pasir Panjang City View, Singapore, 1995 by watercolourist Ong Kim Seng depicts the city in all its glory, cradles by an island and the sea. This populous city is reflected by the almost-real looking buildings, cranes and the sea, all highlighted using Kim Seng’s expertise and prowess in the medium. Merging concepts with finesse of execution, the artist presents representative images which are also ethereal in their beauty, flawless in their elemental flow and appropriation of light. The self-taught artist has garnered multiple accolades, including the Cultural Medallion in 1990 and seven awards by the American Watercolour Society. To him, “Art is a continuous journey. There may be pitfalls and times where you get stuck. It is up to one to choose a path and go along with it.” As a plein-air realist painter, he stays true to his subject-matter, but continues to add an element of intrigue to it by varying the vantage points of his paintings. A fan of nature and traditional architecture, Ong often travels to Bali, Tibet, Nepal, Italy and more, in search of new subject-matter.

Entitled ‘Market Kathmandu,1991’, this work is as humble as it is beautiful. Ong with his mastery, depicts a daily scene in Kathmandu, in presumably, a market. An earthy palette becomes the painting, with meticulous portrayal of details. Pails and basins are seen strewn about the left of the shop, some holding vegetables. What looks like a hole in the wall shop is manned by a Nepalese lady dressed in a vibrant saree, tending to two modest, female customers. There is a simplistic beauty to this work.

ONG KIM SENG : Terengganu Street on Rest Day, 1980

            Est: RM15,000 - RM30,000

The abundantly awarded watercolourist, Ong Kim Seng has spent over 30 years capturing Singapore’s vibrant city on canvas, spanning its river and quaint town — Chinatown to be specific. The artist, whose paintings include Singapore River, Heritage Shophouses, Chinatown and more, regularly grace the walls of KL Lifestyle Art Space and featured in its auctions, are much sought after by art connoisseurs. According to Kim Seng, Trengganu Street, where he ate Wantan noodles, was the same place that he would whip out his brush and canvas to paint. “The girl manning the stall there would always clear a place for me to paint,” said the artist. “Trengganu Street even till today is the centre of Chinatown Centre. This is the busiest street in the whole of Chinatown. For a plein air painter like me, there is always a difference at any time of day, be it colour or composition. Each time the atmosphere is different. Even till today when all the rustic stalls are gone I still like to stroll around the place in search of an angle to paint. Pairing Kim Seng’s artistic prowess and his niche of manipulating light in works, viewers are brought back to the simple days of yesteryear, evoking nostalgia and memories for Singaporeans who have been to the place.

            Est: RM20,000 - RM35,000

‘Nepal in Autumn - Bhaktapur Square’ is a stunning en plein air depiction of the landscape at Bhaktapur Square – a city in the east of Kathmandu. An earthy tone washes over the artwork – illustrating the brick-laden, derelict buildings found in this township. Beyond the square, terraced buildings seem to greet the cloudy sky and a glimpse of Mount Everestforms a picturesque backdrop. Aptly titled, on the foreground, heaps of hay come into view, strewn about under the sun in preparation for winter, to feed the yaks and mules. The artist was amazed by this uncommon sight and proceeded to immortalise it through this painting.
