Fred Sergenian American, 1901-1969 Untitled Oil on canvas 42 x 50 inches (106.68 x 127 cm) Fred Sergenian was born in Yalta, Russia in 1901. As a young child, he and his family immigrated to the United States where he was raised in New York City and attended public schools. He began his art studies at The Art Students League, studying with George Luks, and at The National Academy of Design. For a short time, he was a student of Howard Giles, an exponent of dynamic symmetry. In the 1920's he pursued his studies further in Paris, Florence, and Rome, torn, as he said, "between the modern and the old masters." Working as a freelance artist until 1934, he then joined Young & Rubicam, the advertising agency, where he served as Vice President and Head of the Art Department for 12 years. He retired in 1959 to devote himself full time to painting. He was a next door neighbor and mentor to Brice Marden when Brice began his art studies in the late fifties. Throughout Marden's childhood, Sergenian advised him to connect with his artist side. In the book Plane Image, Marden noted that Sergenian was "a big influence, he still painted, was always very encouraging, especially when I started out in art school." C
