C’est durant la bataille d’Esslingégalement appelée bataille d’Aspern que les troupes françaises affrontent les troupes autrichiennesà 10 km de Viennedu 20 au 22 mai 1809. Les autrichiensalliés avec la Russie y voient une opportunité de revanche à leur difficile défaite à Austerlitz en 1805. L’artiste choisit ici de saisir un instant clé de la bataillecelui du repos de l’armée française avant un nouvel assaut : les soldatsépuisésse tiennent tant bien que mal en ligne tandis que les corps de certains blessés gisent à leurs pieds sur le chemin boueux. Deux généraux assis sur une colline en face de l’armée semblent guetter une intervention imminente de l’ennemi. Lucien Pierre Sergent se fit une spécialité de la peinture militaire. Actif durant la seconde moitié du XIXe siècleil dépeint les plus importantes batailles du siècle dont celles de MarengoFriedland et Waterloo. À Vizillele musée de la Révolution française conserve une oeuvre de l’artiste?: Combat de Bagneux13 octobre 1870.

Durante la sua carriera si dedicò prevalentemente a dipingere soggetti militari. La tela in esame raffigura un episodio bellico della guerra franco prussiana combattuta dal 19 luglio 1870 al 10 maggio 1871 tra il secondo Impero francese e, dopo la caduta del regime, dalla terza Repubblica francese contro la Confederazione Tedesca del Nord (guidata dal Regno di Prussia), alleata con i regni tedeschi del sud di Baden, Baviera e Württemberg. The work depicts a picturesque river landscape with thunderclouds in the sky. The scenery is animated by a number of figures in simple costumes, going about their daily business. In the course of the industrialization and urbanization, the interest in untouched nature continuously increased in the course of the 19th century. The genre of landscape painting therefore experienced a great survival and was artistically interpreted in various ways. The work is in good condition considering its age. Inspection under UV light reveals smaller areas of retouching along the lower left edge and the upper center of the painting. Further retouchings have been made in the lower right corner, reaching up to the small figure of the shepherd. The whole depiction is also affected by scattered very small areas of retouching. The wooden frame is gilded and shows small traces of age and use. The framed work measures 44.5 x 64.5 cm and the size of the stretcher is 35.5 x 55.5 cm. Lucien Pierre Sergent (1849-1904) Lucien Pierre Sergent was born in Massy and received his artistic training under the painters Vauchelet Pils and Jean-Paul Laurens. Sergent was mainly active as a battle painter and executed vivid depictions of historical battlegrounds that were partly acquired by the French government. His works were internationally exhibited, including the Paris Salon and further exhibition in New York, Chicago, San Francisco and Tokyo.
