      • Serlio (Sebastiano) Extraordinario Libro di Architettura, Venice, Giouambattista, Marchio Sessa, 1566.
        Oct. 20, 2022

Serlio (Sebastiano) Extraordinario Libro di Architettura, Venice, Giouambattista, Marchio Sessa, 1566.

        Est: £600 - £800

Serlio (Sebastiano) Extraordinario Libro di Architettura, woodcut device to title and woodcut initials, 50 engraved plates, with late 16th/early 17th century ink manuscript note to foot of title (and alteration to date) and to all plates, also ink ornamental sketch to verso of final plate and list of Spanish names to rear free endpaper, damp-staining to title, text and first & last few plates, mostly to upper outer corner, some soiling, light marginal water-staining towards end, modern limp vellum, [EDIT 16 CNCE 36440; Not in Berlin Kat., Fowler or Millard Italian], folio (c.355 x 240mm.), Venice, Giouambattista, Marchio Sessa, 1566. ⁂ Very rare edition of what came to be known as Serlio's Sixth Book, not cited by Fowler in his list of printings and with only 4 copies located by Magali Vène in her Bibliographia Serliana, Paris, 2007 (3 in Paris and one in Madrid). We can trace no copy at auction. "This book on gates and doors was published in 1551 in Lyon with a dedication to Henry II, probably with the hope of Serlio that he could interest the new king in becoming his patron. It provides models that combine a manneristic expression and a coarsening of Michelangelo's designs by introducing Northern strap work and the influence of the Fontainebleau school. The designs had a great influence in northern Europe, especially France, and were a source of many later books on the application of the ornament of the orders to doors and gates. The Extraordinario Libro, which was never intended to be a part of the architectural treatise, replaced Serlio's unpublished Book 6 (on habitations) in standard editions of his work, beginning with 1563. Only after 1600 was the Extraordinario Libro titled as the sixth book." (Millard French 153).

Serlio (Sebastiano) Libro Primo d'Architettura, second Italian edition, title with woodcut architectural border, contemporary ink inscription at foot and small wormhole to lower margin, browned, ink stain to D1v & D2r, a few other ink smudges and marginal soiling, Gio.Battista & Marchio Sessa, [1560]; Il Secondo Libro di Perspettiva, first Italian edition, large woodcut printer's device to verso of final leaf (partly coloured red), Cornelio de Nicolini da Sabbio for Marchio Sessa, [1551]; Il Terzo Libro..., third edition, woodcut pictorial title with title in red & black, large woodcut printer's device to verso of final leaf, Pietro de Nicolini da Sabbio for Marchio Sessa, 1551, together 3 works in 1 vol., woodcut initials and numerous illustrations and diagrams, some full-page, occasional light marginal soiling and a few small stains to Books II & III but generally clean and bright, modern etched octagonal bookplate of Ralph Kirkpatrick, eighteenth century vellum, spine titled in gilt, slightly rubbed and soiled, [Fowler 306, 304 & 311; cf. Millard Italian 125], folio (c.355 x 240mm.), Venice ⁂ A good set of early printings of Books I-III of Serlio's great work and including a particularly good copy of Book III. Books I & II cover geometry, perspective and stage design, Book III depicts the surviving buildings of ancient Rome and used most of the original blocks. It is curious to find mixed printings of Books I & 2 as they were issued together in both the 1551 and 1560 editions but they were obviously bound together some time ago. S4-T2), woodcut animated initials throughout, both works printed on blue paper, a few repairs and some ink stains, 18th-century brown half morocco, folio (342 x 240mm.) ⁂ Serlio's monumental work represents the first treatise on architecture in which the illustrations assumed primary importance, leading to its becoming one of the most important architectural books to disseminate knowledge of antique heritage and invention throughout Europe during the Italian Renaissance. This copy, printed on blue paper, contains the first edition of Book iii and is followed by the second edition of Book iv, which originally appeared in Venice in 1537. The work is made up of seven Books, which were published separately according to an order explained by Serlio in his preface to Book iv, although in reality the order was only partially followed. Book iii, on ancient monuments, is dedicated to the King of France, François I, and appeared in Venice in 1540, while Books i and ii, on geometry and perspective, respectively, were published simultaneously in bilingual Italian-French editions in Paris in 1545, after Serlio's move to Fontainebleau. Book v, containing twelve temple designs, followed in 1547; it was the last to be published during Serlio's lifetime, once again in Paris in a bilingual version. Book vi, on domestic architecture, was never published, and survives only in two manuscript versions and a series of trial woodcuts. Finally, Book vii was edited posthumously by Jacopo Strada and published in Frankfurt in 1575. By the early 17th century, Serlio's treatise and its various parts, had been translated into several languages, some as unauthorised editions. Book iii is especially important, and the layout Serlio adopted for it, with its well-balanced blocks of text and images, was later copied by Palladio in his Quattro Libri dell'Architettura of 1570. "The first genuine advance in architectural illustration seems to have been made by Serlio, and his Libro Terzo set the type of architectural illustration in Italy for the rest of the Century" (Fowler). The printer Marcolini, born in Forlì and active in Venice until 1559, issued a handful of copies of his editions published between 1539 and 1540 on large blue paper as presentation or special copies, including Serlio's Book iii and Book iv. These were intended for patrons or very distinguished clientele, as the copy on blue paper of both Books, bound together as they are here, once owned by the Prince of Bibliophiles Jean Grolier (1479-1565) and now in the Bibliothèque nationale de France well attests. The Walters Art Gallery in Baltimore has a copy of each of these Books, while a copy of Book iii only is preserved at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, bequeathed by the great collector W. Gedney Beatty (1869-1942). Copies printed on blue paper of the other Books belonging to Serlio's 'architectural encyclopedia' are not recorded. The early owner of this volume might be identified as the Bolognese antiquarian Francesco Bartoli (1675-1733), who drew numerous copies after antiques, and played a notable role in the reception of the classical tradition during the eighteenth-century, particularly in Britain. It is also likewise possible to attribute to his hand the finely drawn leaves on white paper which replace those lacking on blue paper. Some of Bartoli's drawings preserved in the Eton College Library show plans and decorative elements featured by Serlio in his Book iii, relating to, among other things, the Tempio di Bacco and the decorative mosaics in the vaulting of the Roman Church of S. Costanza, considered by Serlio the ancient Temple of Baccus (see Il terzo libro, fols. C4v-D1r). Provenance: Francesco Bartoli, possibly the Bolognese antiquarian (1675-1733; early ownership inscription on the first title and margins of fol. V3 in first work as well as fol. A4v of second work, partially legible under UV lamp). The marginalia as well as the drawings that replace the missing leaves are attributed to the skilled hand of this early owner. Literature: Casali Annali, 51; Mortimer Italian, 472; Berlin Katalog 2560; Fowler 308; RIBA 2968 and 2966. II. Casali Annali, 52; Charvet 2; Fowler 314; W. B. Serlio (1475-1554) was first called in France by king Francis I to advise on the construction of the castle of Fontainebleau and was after named chief architect of the court. The first work, dedicated to king France I of France, is an anthology of the most beautiful ancient Roman and Italian antique buildings, completed with some of Bramante and Raphael’s major contemporary architectural edifices. The ancient edifices included in the book are typologically classified: temples and religious edifices (with the Tempietto of San Pietro in Montorio and the plans for St Peter’s Basilica in Rome), theatres, porticos, columns and obelisks, amphitheatres, bridges and thermal baths, triumphal arches; modern buildings (such as Bramante’s Belvedere palace, Raphael’s Villa Madama, Villa Poggio Reale near Naples). Serlio mostly provides direct information as he himself saw the Roman ruins, yet he does also use other first-hand sources.

Antwerp: Pieter Coecke, 1549 -- Den viifsten boeck von Architecturen. Antwerp: widow of Pieter Coecke, 1553. 5 parts in one, 2υo (356 x 243 mm). Black letter. FIRST DUTCH EDITION of one of the first modern works on architecture. "Serlio was the first to publish a book on architecture in which the illustrations assumed primary importance" (Mortimer). Serlio's texts are concerned with the fundamentals of geometry and perspective "but book two contains three elaborate full-page designs for the theater" (Mortimer). These are a "scène comique" and two "scènes satyrique." "Sebastiano Serlio is one of the four Renaissance authors, with Giacomo Barozzi da Vignola, Andrea Palladio, and Vincenzo Scamozzi, who surpassed in importance Vitruvius and his sixteenth-century commentators" (Millard). Some of the illustrations of this edition are reverse copies from an undated Venetian edition and were used in three subsequent editions. Venice: Francesco Marcolini, March 1540. 2° (343 x 234mm). Woodcut architectural title, woodcut illustrations, some full-page, initials and colophon border. (Dampstaining in the fore- and bottom margins, and in a few leaves, some soiling on the title, light wear to the edges of the first and last leaves, a few illustrations shaved in the fore-margin.) Later, probably 18th-century vellum-backed boards, edges mottled in red (remnant of morocco label on the spine, extremities rubbed, some staining and wear). Provenance: shelf-marks on the pastedowns. FIRST EDITION. 'The first genuine advance in architectural illustration seems to have been made by Serlio, and his Libro Terzo SET THE TYPE OF ARCHITECTURAL ILLUSTRATION IN ITALY FOR THE REST OF THE CENTURY' (Fowler). Serlio travelled throughout Europe and probably drew most of these ruins and buildings himself; he was 'the first writer of the Renaissance to attempt to publish a coherent, complete and practical theory of architecture in a series of illustrated volumes' (RIBA). Further parts appeared, with a complex publication history, but parts 4 and 3 were issued first. The Berlin Kat. 2560; Fowler 308; Mortimer, Harvard Italian 472; RIBA 2968 and cf.2966.

Titles to books I and II with Serlian scrollwork borders, repeated in titles to books IV and V respectively, book III title in a cartouche supported by putti above a landscape of ruins, 403 woodcut diagrams and illustrations, many full-page. Books I-IV printed in black letter. (Bk. I soiled at margins, repair to title affecting border, next three leaves likewise repaired on verso, ff.5 and 6 misbound; ff. 29 in Bk III torn with loss recto and verso and repaired at gutter, ff. 30 similarly repaired, ff. 45 with closed tear; ff. 3 of Bk. IV slightly stained, ff. 5 with tear into illustration on verso. Occasional waterstaining to all five books.) Contemporary reversed calf (rebacked, front cover subsequently detached, one corner repaired, others worn). FIRST EDITION OF 'BY FAR THE MOST SUBSTANTIAL ENGLISH ARCHITECTURAL BOOK OF ITS DAY' (RIBA). Its two precedents, Shute's First and Chief Groundes of Architecture (1563), and a translation of Blum's Quinque columnarum exacta descriptio (1601), both derived from Serlio. The only full English edition until recent times, it was financed by the elder Robert Peake (1551?-1619), Sergeant-Painter to Prince Henry from 1607, who signs the dedication to the Prince, and whose name appears in the imprints and colophons; whether Peake himself was the translator is uncertain. It is noticeable that the woodblocks are quite heavily inked to conceal their wear. They had been last used in a German language edition published by Ludwig Königs in Basel, 1609-09, but first appeared in the Antwerp editions of Pieter Coecke van Aelst and his widow between 1539 and 1553. The same blocks were used for the 1606 Amsterdam edition of all five books, published by Cornelis Claesz. The text for this edition was the one used for the English translation, while itself deriving from Coecke's Flemish and French editions of 1539-1553. RARE ON THE MARKET. ROBERT PEAKE, 1611 folio, five books in one volume, first english edition, woodcut illustrations engraved by Pieter Coecke van Aelst (?) and Cornelis Bos (?) after Sebastiano Serlio and Baldassare Peruzzi, extra-illustrated with engraved plates by Dall'Acqua and others (late eighteenth-century), black letter, woodcut ornaments, initials and head- and tail-pieces, new endpapers, modern quarter cloth, lacking (Book 1:) [PI] 1 (title), A2, 2N1, many leaves stained, repaired, extended and silked, some headlines slightly cropped or shaved LITERATURE STC 22235; Fowler 331; BAL RIBA 2976 NOTE The first complete work on architecture in English, "by far the most substantial English architectural book of its day..." (BAL RIBA, p.1825) and one of the rarest seventeenth-century works on the subject. The text is a translation of the 1606 Dutch edition, itself translated from Coecke's Flemish and French editions of 1539-1553. The woodcut blocks had originally been used in these same editions, published in Antwerp and reprinted in the 1540s and 1550s. They were also used in a 1606 edition published in Amsterdam by Cornelis Claesz, and the Basel edition of 1608-09. The earliest part of Serlio's work had first been published in Italy in 1537, and set a new standard for architectural illustration which was widely influential. Inigo Jones, for instance, made use of the woodcuts in his stage designs for court masques.
