(1695 Neuenhain - 1768 Wien) Umkreis Selbstbildnis von Christian Seybold Bei dem in effektvoller, von Rembrandt beeinflusster Hell-Dunkelmalerei ausgeführten Werk, handelt es sich laut der Seybold-Expertin Dr. Lilian Ruhe um eine Kopie nach einem bisher unbekannten Selbstbildnis, das in die Nähe seiner Selbstporträts in der Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister in Dresden (Inv.-Nr. Gal.-Nr. 2096) und im Schloss Kuskowo (bei Moskau) eingeordnet werden kann. Seybold malt sich mit kritischem, selbstbewusstem Blick und wendet sich zugleich dem Betrachter zu, das markante Gesicht en face, auf dem Kopf seine charakteristische, zerknautschte, blaue Mütze. Reizvoll und einzigartig an dieser Komposition ist, dass er in der linken Hand das Miniaturporträt eines noch nicht identifizierbaren hochrangigen Mäzens hält. Seybold ist seit 1715 in Wien nachweisbar; 1745 ernannte ihn König August III. von Polen (zugleich Kurfürst Friedrich August II. von Sachsen) zum Hofmaler, 1749 wurde er Hofmaler Maria Theresias und Assoziierter der Akademie in Wien. Außer durch Rembrandt wurde er in seinen Selbstbildnissen insbesondere durch den 1708/09-1723 in Wien tätigen Johann Kupetzky (1667 - 1740) geprägt. Öl/Lwd., auf Karton kaschiert. 63 cm x 47 cm. Sie waren über Jahrzehnte Bestandteil der Ausstattung der Familienresidenz im ältesten Renaissancehaus der Stadt Grimma. In den circa 1980er Jahren wurden beide Gemälde in der Dresdner Gemäldegalerie fachmännisch restauriert - wachsdoubliert. Christian Seybold – successor, Self-Portrait of the Artist in his Mature Age

Seybold, who came to Vienna very early, became `Cammer Mahler` of the imperial family whose members made numerous portraits. Here he also received several commissions from Friedrich August, Elector of Saxony, King of Poland. The self-portrait at hand is, without a doubt, an inspiration from Rembrandt's self-portraits. Seybold had access to the imperial collections and was able to study the portraits there.

NOTE This picture is an outstanding example of Seybold's studies of old age, the type of picture for which he is best known. His painting technique was characterized by the utmost attention he paid to detail, which rivals that of many miniaturists. Like many German artists of his age, he sought inspiration in the achievements of painters of the Dutch golden age, in particular Gerrit Dou. Balthasar Denner (1685 - 1749) was a close contemporary of Seybold and was an instrumental figure in the his artistic development. He also painted several portraits of elderly ladies, some of which are now in The Louvre, Paris, and The Kunsthistorische Museum, Vienna.
