      Portrait of Gerard Anne Edwards (1733 - 1773), full-length, in a brown velvet jacket with a red and gold brocaded waistcoat, by a table bearing books and a globe, holding a scroll extolling the benefits of education, a balcony and landscape beyond signed and dated 'J Shackleton pinxt 1743' (lower right, at the base of the column) and inscribed 'Tis education forms the tender Brain, Thence noble or mean Thoughts we entertain.' (on the scroll) oil on canvas 70 1/4 x 47 in. (178.4 x 119.4 cm.) in a contemporary George II carved and gilded frame with flowers and fruiting foliage, the upper corners with shells, crested with a coat of arms, attributable to Matthias Lock, circa 1740 - 1745

      full length, wearing Garter robes, the Orb and Sceptre on a table to his left. oil on canvas, in a fine contemporary carved wood frame PROVENANCE Probably presented to George Fermor, 2nd Earl of Pomfret (1722-1785), who became a Lord of the Bedchamber to George III in 1763 LITERATURE AND REFERENCES Geroge Baker, The History and Antiquities of the County of Northamptonshire, 1838, part IV p.145 "King George III, when young, in robes, full length, Ramsay"; F 1910 p.30, hanging in the Corridor; EN 1923, p.11, item 6, £300, in the Picture Gallery; AP 1927, p.15, item 5, £300, in the Picture Gallery CATALOGUE NOTE John Shackleton was appointed principal painter-in-ordinary to George II on 7th March 1749, succeeding William Kent. He continued in office under George III and was paid for portraits of the King and Queen until 1765-6. Another version of this portrait was owned by Sir Benjamin Hammett and was presented by him to the Market Trust in Taunton in December 1792 as by Hoppner (see John Ingamells, Mid-Georgian Portraits 1760 - 1790, 2004, p.200). A copy belongs to Fife Council.
