Condition: The multiple is in good condition with scattered tiny scratches on the surface of the acrylic glass sheet. The wooden box displays slight signs of use as bumped corners, occasional scratches and soiling in places. Otherwise the overall condition is good, too. The multiple measures 180 x 60 x 0.3 cm. The dimensions of the wooden box are 184 x 64 x 4.3 cm. Séan Shanahan (b. 1960) The Irish artist Séan Shanahan was born in Dublin. He studied in London and Madrid and is now one of the artists who developed and refined the geometric abstraction of the early 20th century. Shanahans monochrome object out of MDF panels are often designed for specific architectural situations and spaces. His work has been shown throughout Europe and is represented in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art and the Hugh Lane Municipal Gallery in Dublin and in other public and private collections. His works are exhibited throughout Europe and increasingly sought-after collectible items on the international art market The present aquatint etching is a characteristic graphic work by the Irish artist Seán Shanahan. It shows an abstract composition made of fine geometric lines that remind of the shape of a cross. The artist's works usually have a slightly imbalanced character which is created by varying strengths of lines, here. The aquatint etching is signed with monogram and numbered with pencil upper center 'S.S 12/20'. It is verso numbered with pencil 'C. 13.800'. The sheet is verso mounted on two points on cardboard. The dimensions of the plate are 64.5 x 44 cm and the sheet measures 69.5 x 50.3 cm. The dimensions of the framed work are 73.5 x 54.5 cm. UNTITLED 133.5 by 100cm.; 52½ by 39½in. signed with initials, titled and dated 02-91 on the backboard painted steel, diptych NOTE Born in Dublin, Shanahan studied in London and Madrid and has lived and worked in Montevecchia, Northern Italy since the early 1980s. His work combines abstraction with geometric minimalism as well as an acute attention to line and colour. The present work is typical of the artist's output from the early 1990s when he was working with a variety of unlikely painting surfaces such as fibreboard and natural woods as well as the polished steel sheets evident in Untitled which inevitably draws attention to the importance of the material itself. Shanahan later developed more monochrome compositions and recently his work, continually abstract, has been specifically related to architectural locations. Shanahan has exhibited extensively throughout Europe including single owner exhibitions at the Dublin City Art Gallery The Hugh Lane and the Fondazione Scarampi, Italy and is represented in the permanent collections of The Irish Museum of Modern Art , Dublin and The Hugh Lane amongst many others.
