TOSHUSAI SHARAKU (Japanese, active 1794-1795) "The actor Segawa Kikunojo III as Oshizu, from the Play Hana-Ayame Bunkoroku Soga" 1794 / 1970 - Woodblock nishiki-e, ukiyo-e print with mica on paper. Signed by the artist upper along with a seal by publisher Tsutaya Juzaburo (1750-1797). 15.5 x 10.5 inches (40.5 cm x 26.7 cm). Excellent condition, never framed or displayed, lightly tipped onto original backing. This is a 1970 print from wood blocks, printed by The Japan Association for the 1970 World Exposition for a very limited edition portfolio Selected Masters of Ukiyo-e Prints. The subject Kikunjo was considered the most brilliant actor of female roles of his day. The role depicted is from the play Hana-ayame Bunroku Soga (The Iris Soga of the Bunroku Era) which was performed at the Miyako-za Theatre in Edo in the fifth month of Kansei 6 (1794) from which Sharaku created several portraits.

His active career as a woodblock artist spanned ten months; his prolific work met disapproval and his output came to an end as suddenly and mysteriously as it had begun. His work has come to be considered some of the greatest in the ukiyo-e genre. This woodblock, titled Otani Oniji III in the Role of the Servant Edobei, is a nishiki-e colour print ad has mica treatment and impressed details around the eyes. Framed under glass. The frame is 21 x 15 3/4" with a sight view of 19 3/8 x 14". The print is 14 3/8 x 9 3/8".

The image is from 1794 but this print of ours on original Japanese paper is a 19th century edition. Gorobei is a fish peddler with a most conscientious and thoughtful disposition. His pose and his hand gesture, holding his pipe to his chin, are conventional Kabuki signs for characters immersed in thought. In this scene, Gorobei is planning his strategy for rescuing a friend in trouble. Gorobei is a fish merchant from the Sanya district, on the approach to the Yoshiwara pleasure quarter. He assists the sisters to discover the whereabouts of Shiga Daishichi, their father's murderer. A very similar print, in size, and with the only signature without censor seal kiwame and the publisher's seal “Tsutaya Jûzaburô” below, at the MET, dated “Probably late 1880s or early 1890s”. Not much is known about the woodblock print artist Toshusai Sharaku, who specialized in kabuki portraits. His career spanned only ten months from 1794 to 1795, with around 150 prints known. Unlike his contemporaries, Sharaku did not idealize his subjects, instead creating realistic portrayals that were not always flattering, and his prints were not a popular success at the time. His best works convey a rare perceptivity, with a psychological insight and a deep understanding of the dramatic nature of the roles and the actors he depicted. Sharaku left behind a body of masterworks of ukiyo-e kabuki portraiture that remained unrecognized until a century after his death.

The role played by Tsuneyo has been identified by the scholar Suwa Haruo. In the Yakuwari banzauke (List of theatrical roles) in the Diet Library he found two roles listed for Tsuneyo: one as "Ippei's sister, Osan" in the play Koinyobo, and the other as "Shizuka Gozen" in Yoshitsune senbonzakura. Both plays were performed at the Kawarazaki Theater the fifth month of 1794 (Kansei 6). Not much is known about the woodblock print artist Toshusai Sharaku, who specialized in kabuki portraits. His career spanned only ten months from 1794 to 1795, with around 150 prints known.
