b. 1856 - d. 1911

Sharpe was a British watercolorist known for her images of children and illustrations of youngsters in natural settings. She was eight years younger than her sister, Helen Allingham, also an artist. Caroline was especially noted for her illustrated childrens’ books and her published Christmas cards. Between 1883 until her marriage in 1892, Caroline (Paterson) Sharpe displayed her works in the Dudley gallery, London, in other art galleries in Manchester, Liverpool and Birmingham. She gave art lessons in her Hampstead home. She was a member of the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolour.

    • CAROLINE SHARPE,  BRITISH 1856-1911-  MOTHER AND CHILD CROSSING A STONE BRIDGE;  PENCIL, WATERCOLO
      Mar. 29, 2023

CAROLINE SHARPE,  BRITISH 1856-1911-  MOTHER AND CHILD CROSSING A STONE BRIDGE;  PENCIL, WATERCOLO

      Est: £200 - £250

Caroline Sharpe,  British 1856-1911-  Mother and child crossing a stone bridge;  pencil, watercolour, and bodycolour on paper, signed 'Caroline Sharpe.' (lower right), 29.4 x 21.4 cm.  Provenance:  Anon. sale, Christie's, London, 9 May 1989, lot 27 (£990).  Private Collection, UK.  Note:  In style, palette and technique Caroline Sharpe's watercolours are very similar to her older sister's, Helen Allingham (1848-1926), but her oeuvre is less prolific. After moving to Hampstead with her mother, she earned a living by giving private art lessons and teaching at a local school. Additional income was generated by painting portraits, usually of children. By the 1880s she was exhibiting her fine watercolours in London and Manchester galleries, as well as illustrating children's books and producing designs for greetings card firms. Her art career came to an abrupt end upon her marriage in 1892 to Sutton Sharpe, a Commercial Clerk and widower. She no longer needed to support herself and immersed herself into family life at the relatively late age of thirty-six. The few paintings that were executed under her married name, including the present work, were painted for pleasure rather than necessity. Here, Sharpe has captured an endearing scene of maternal affection whilst avoiding the sentimentality which characterises much of her output. The style of bridge construction suggests a bridge-causeway connected with a castle or other fortification.
