    • FELIX THOMAS SHARPLES (VIRGINIA, 1786-AFT. 1824), ATTRIBUTED, MINIATURE PORTRAIT SKETCH
      Dec. 02, 2023

FELIX THOMAS SHARPLES (VIRGINIA, 1786-AFT. 1824), ATTRIBUTED, MINIATURE PORTRAIT SKETCH

      Est: $100 - $200

FELIX THOMAS SHARPLES (VIRGINIA, 1786-AFT. 1824), ATTRIBUTED, MINIATURE PORTRAIT SKETCH, ink on paper, a profile depiction of an elderly gentleman with pronounced proboscis, by tradition, discovered in the artist's sketchbook, MESDA label verso, no signature located. Housed under glass in an old frame. Circa 1795. 4" x 3 3/8" OA. Literature: Recorded by MESDA in 1975, photo number S-5056. Catalogue Note: The son of British itinerant artist James Sharples (1751-1811), Felix Sharples (1788-1844) began assisting his father with portraiture at a young age. The family made several trips to America around the turn of the 19th century, mostly based in Philadelphia and New York. Felix, however, began venturing south around 1806 and is recorded in Virginia, North Carolina, and Maryland repeatedly throughout the first quarter of the 19th century. In an advertisement for the December 18, 1811 issue of the Norfolk Herald, Felix Sharples announced his ability to "engage in paint excellent likenesses, in Oil, In Crayons, or in Miniature". In this same advertisement, he listed "$50" as his price for "an Oil portrait as large as life" and "12 1/2" dollars for a "small Crayon portrait". The present example, from the artist's sketchbook, is likely a portrait study from his youth.

FELIX THOMAS SHARPLES (VIRGINIA, 1786-AFT. 1824) ATTRIBUTED VIRGINIA SKETCH

      Est: $500 - $800

FELIX THOMAS SHARPLES (VIRGINIA, 1786-AFT. 1824) ATTRIBUTED VIRGINIA SKETCH, ink on paper, depicting "North End Plantation" on North River, Gloucester Co. (now Mathews Co.), VA, featuring the manor house with two wings surrounded by dependencies, overlooking North River, a sailboat with people in the foreground, not signed or inscribed. Conservation matted. First quarter 19th century. 6 1/2" x 7 3/4" sheet.  Literature: Recorded by MESDA, photo number S-5049.  Catalogue Note: John Page (1724-1774) of Rosewell acquired the North End lands by the early 1740s, likely around the same time he married Jane Byrd (1729-1774), daughter of William Byrd of Westover. He served as a Burgess of Gloucester County from 1752 to 1768, after which he ascended to a position on the Governor's Council. Jane Byrd Page bore 15 children while they resided at North End. John and Jane both died in 1774, less than two months apart. Their eldest son, Mann Page, inherited the bulk of the estate, managing it until he died in 1778. The property was then purchased by Andrew Van Bibber in the 1790s. It is believed that all structures were razed by the end of the 19th century.
