BIOGRAPHY: Growing up in Chicago, Annie Shaw, painter, etcher and art teacher, became in 1874 at age 22, the first woman to open an art studio in Chicago. She showed early art talent indicated by her winning an award for pencil drawing at age twelve. From 1868 to 1872, she studied with Henry Chapman Ford, and two years later opened her studio. She traveled throughout the country, doing plein-aire painting, and also established a reputation for excellent teaching at the Chicago Academy of Design, predecessor of the Art Institute. In 1876, Shaw was elected to full membership of the Academy, the first women to achieve that distinction. It is thought that she learned etching from John Vanderpoel at the Chicago Academy of Design when she was a student.Between 1881 and 1884, she had a studio in New York City, and from 1884 to 1885 in Boston. "A solo exhibition and sale held at the Art Institute of Chicago after her death included 241 oil paintings and 50 watercolors; of which very few can be found today.
