        Shaw (Henry) Dresses and Decorations of the Middle Ages, 2 vol., first edition in book form, additional pictorial title and 93 plates, most hand-coloured engravings, a few heightened with gold or gum arabic, 2 double-page, illustrations and decorative initials, many printed in colours from woodblocks, occasional foxing but plates generally clean, contemporary half roan, t.e.g., rebacked in calf preserving part of old spines, William Pickering, 1843 § Pugin (Augustus Welby) Specimens of Gothic Architecture, 2 vol., additional colour titles, plates, original cloth, very slightly rubbed, Edinburgh, 1895, 4to (4) *** The first was "Shaw's most ambitious work...showing paintings, miniatures, stained glass, furnishings, glasses, chests, vestments, gold cups, jewellery, etc. etc....hand-coloured in the most sumptuous way...It has a considerable claim to be called the most handsome book produced in the whole of the nineteenth century...".         Wells Cathedral.- Shaw (Henry, antiquary and illuminator, 1800-73) Autograph Letter signed to John Britton, 2pp, with conjugate blank and address panel, sm. 4to, Wells, 5th September 1823, making drawings of Wells Cathedral for John Britton's Cathedral Antiquities, "I received the Parcel containing the sketches to yesterday morning. I shall proceed with them as fast as possible - The West front I have drawn the full size of the Drawing board... as you desired, taking my station immediately opposite the centre at the farther end of the Church yard so as to take in the principal Tower - do you intend this... be reduced for Mr Le Keux?, three small water-stains, slightly browned, folds. *** "A precocious architectural draughtsman, [Shaw] published details of ornament from English medieval churches in 1823 (A Series of Details of Gothic Architecture) and supplied John Britton with drawings of Wells Cathedral for plates dated 1824 and 1825 included in the fourth volume of Cathedral Antiquities, eventually published as a series in 1836; Shaw's view of the interior was remembered as 'one of the best plates' (Britton, 2.134)." - Oxford DNB.

        (1824 – 1887) Union brigadier general, colonel and first commander of the 10th Massachusetts Volunteers. Seriously wounded during the Battle of Fair Oaks. Good content war-date A.L.S. 'Your Huusband' but also writing 'Mrs. H. S. Briggs' directly beneath, 1p. 4to., Maryland Heights, Oh., July 8, 1863 to his wife. In part: '...We got here at nightfall last night...Gen. Kenley's Brigade arrived before me and drove away the Bushwhackers of whom there were considerable numbers here and across the river...This is not a desirable position...I try to & do think it is just the place for me else the Great King and Good Father would not have ordered me here...' Very good.
